ABC News Says Confiscation is the Key to Stopping Gun Violence

Even the most liberal of liberal Democrats in Washington, D.C. will go out of their way to tell Americans that they have no interest – NONE – in going into people’s homes and taking away their guns. That’s just NRA conspiracy nonsense, don’t you know? No one actually wants to do that, even if we do spend an inordinate amount of time talking about Australia’s success with their own mass confiscation scheme. But no, no, we’re big defenders of the Second Amendment over here in the Democratic Party. We just want commonsense solutions like universal background checks, guyz. That’s all! We promise!

But then you get laws that they recently passed in places like California, Oregon, Washington, and Connecticut that show the lie behind the denials. Because while those states have not begun implementing anything quite so drastic as widespread mandatory buybacks, they have passed laws that allow guns to be confiscated from law-abiding citizens with no more than a judge’s order. No due process needed. All that’s necessary is the word of a friend or family member, a judge’s sign-off, and presto-chango, you lose your guns for a while. And if you take ABC News’s word for it, this is exactly the kind of law we need to roll out nationwide.

“One relatively unknown tool for stopping gun violence may soon get a lot more attention,” they write. “An Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) empowers family members and police to take guns away from a person who may pose a danger to themselves or others. The person’s access to firearms is blocked until they can demonstrate that the risk is over. Essentially, ERPOs are a temporary restraining order for guns.”

Until they can demonstrate that the risk is over?

Well, that’s certainly up for some debate, now isn’t it? How does one demonstrate that “the risk” is over? How does one prove they are no longer in a homicidal state of mind? How does one prove a state of mind to begin with? We’re talking about suspending a person’s constitutional rights using concepts that are scientifically questionable and legally unacceptable.

ABC News goes on to interview those rascally gun-grabbers at Everytown for Gun Safety to get a nice, balanced view of the issue.

“While it is impossible to determine how many of the recent shooting tragedies ERPOs could have prevented, they could have provided at least another layer of protection,” said Everytown’s deputy legal director, William Rosen. “Mass shooters often display warning signs before they carry out their attacks, and ERPO provides an opportunity for family members or law enforcement to intervene before a tragedy occurs.”

So here we have Chief Abolish Guns himself admitting that we really have no idea if these ERPOs actually do anything, but hey, they make us feel a lot better. And we can use weasel words like “often” to make our case about mass shootings and no one can really hold us accountable.

Well, that’s great, but we’re going to need a little bit more than your word for it before we start grabbing guns all over the place because Aunt Francine thinks her nephew Bobby is too unhinged to have a firearm for his personal protection. If that’s all it takes to get around the Second Amendment then we don’t HAVE a Second Amendment.
