Biden: Trump’s Proposals Will Worsen Islamic Terrorism

Vice President Joe Biden, in a speech to the Center for a New American Security think-tank on Monday, said that Donald Trump’s proposals will make the problem of Islamic terrorism even worse than it is now.

“Our campaign against violent extremists must be smart and remain consistent with America’s values,” Biden said according to early excerpts released by the White House. “Adopting the tactics of our enemies – using torture, threatening to kill innocent family members, indiscriminately bombing civilian populations – not only violates our values, it’s deeply damaging to our security.”

Biden, who resolutely stayed on the usual Obama administration path of not calling radical Islam out by name, said that Trump’s campaign rhetoric would weaken America’s status in the international community.

“Wielding the politics of fear and intolerance – like proposals to ban Muslims from entering the United States or slandering entire religious communities as complicit in terrorism – calls into question America’s status as the greatest democracy in the history of the world,” Biden said. “Alienating 1.5 billion Muslims – the vast majority of whom, at home and abroad, are peace-loving – will only make the problem worse. It plays into the narrative of extremists. We shouldn’t give them what they want. We are so much better than that.”

It’s this kind of namby-pamby, feel-good foreign policy that has gotten us into this mess to begin with. We desperately need political leaders who understand there is sometimes a difference between the kind of sing-along rhetoric that sounds good and wholesome and the practical realities of the world. No one – not Trump, not anyone else of significance – is suggesting that all 1.5 billion Muslims harbor anti-American views or terrorist aspirations. No one is suggesting that an immigration ban would be permanent. These are strawman arguments invented by politicians too lazy to respond to the actual proposals.

Trump’s theme – and this is what it’s been from Day One – is that politicians on both sides of the ideological spectrum are being naive. Bound by the dangerous rules of political correctness, they have sold our country down the river in terms of security, immigration, and trade. This is what we need to address if we want to make America great again, and if it means hurting some feelings in the process…well, that’s a tiny price to pay.
