Democrat D.A. in Dallas is No Longer Prosecuting Theft as a Crime

Anyone without blinders on their eyes could see this coming a mile away. The moment Democrats made “mass incarceration” of minorities a civil-liberties issue, you knew it would not be long before we were no longer talking about marijuana possession and other “victimless” crimes. You knew it would only be a matter of time before some yahoo Democrat got elected who would begin pushing for other forms of decriminalization: Vandalism, littering, and hey, maybe even theft. Because as long as someone isn’t physically injured in a crime, why, shouldn’t we just give the perp a pass? We don’t want to perpetuate the school-to-prison pipeline, lawd no.

And now here we are. The citizens of Dallas have a new district attorney – a Democrat by the name of John Creuzot. He is a strict believer in the healing power of not prosecuting “low-level” crimes, which is exactly what you want out of your county’s chief law enforcer.

As you might expect, Creuzot’s refusal to put these low-level criminals in jail is getting quite a bit of pushback from local police and government officials, who think he’s inviting disaster upon their community. But Creuzot, in a letter to the community last week, insisted that his office would no longer prosecute certain drug crimes, and they would no longer put anyone in handcuffs for “crimes of necessity.”

“Study after study shows that when we arrest, jail, and convict people for non-violent crimes committed out of necessity, we only prevent that person from gaining the stability necessary to lead a law-abiding life,” the D.A.’s office wrote. “Criminalizing poverty is counter-productive for our community’s health and safety. For that reason, this office will not prosecute theft of personal items less than $750 unless the evidence shows that the alleged theft was for economic gain.”

“The changes that I promised will be a step forward in ending mass incarceration in Dallas County, and will make our community safer by ensuring that our limited resources are spent where they can do the most good,” said Creuzot.

The D.A.’s office will also decline to prosecute trespassing crimes, individuals who drive on a suspended license, and “technical” probation violations.

As you might have guessed, not everyone is thrilled with the new “woke” district attorney.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbot warned that Creuzot’s policies were “reckless and irresponsible.”

“That is legalizing stealing for property less than $750,” he told a local NBC station. “What kind of message does that send for one, but for another, listen if your district attorney wants to change the law he is in the wrong job. He needs to run for the legislature and come here to try and change the law. His job, his oath, is to enforce the law that exists and he should prosecute anybody for stealing anything.”

Meanwhile, local police unions are calling on Creuzot to resign.

“While he has announced the retrial of a police officer because he didn’t like the result of a jury trial verdict DA John Creuzot has declared he will not follow the law and prosecute certain crimes,” said Sgt Todd Harrison, President of the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas. “That’s unacceptable and he should be removed from office. When he was campaigning for the office we don’t remember not prosecuting crime as part of his platform.”

No, that probably wouldn’t have gone over too well. But give the left a few more years to move the Overton Window a bit further, and you’ll see Democrats proudly campaigning on a “we’ll just ignore the law” platform. Hell, at this rate, it might not even take that long.
