Democrat: Trump’s Next Court Pick Will Lead to “Destruction of the Constitution”

It’s been very amusing listening to liberal pundits and senior Democrats pretend as though Anthony Kennedy’s retirement marks some line in the sand where NOW the left is going to get serious about opposing President Trump and the Republicans.

Oh, for the last year and a half, we’ve just gone along to get along, rubber stamping all of the president’s initiatives and legislative packages, because we really would like to govern in good faith. But NOW…now that we have a situation comparable to the Merrick Garland nomination in 2016, we’re going to go full-on obstructionist, and we hope the American people will understand and support us as we make this tiny but important deviation from legislative norms. Please, do stand beside us in these trying times.

It’s really quite ridiculous.

It’s ridiculous because the tagline for the Democratic Party since the election has been: #Resist. Since Trump’s inauguration, Democrats have obstructed on healthcare, they have obstructed on taxes, they have obstructed on investigations into the FBI/Justice Department, and, yes, they have obstructed on the nomination of a Supreme Court justice. They have done nothing BUT deviate from legislative norms since Trump took office, so it is beyond reason for them to sell this line of bull to the American people.

Perhaps – PERHAPS – if they had worked together with Republicans and the president for the last eighteen months, their stand here could be viewed as admirable by enough Independents to make a political difference. But because they have made #Resistance the name of their game from Day One of this presidency, who can look at this as anything more than yet another chapter in the same futile war?

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that it was his intention to see a Supreme Court nominee confirmed to Kennedy’s seat before the midterm elections.

“The Senate stands ready to fulfill its constitutional role by offering advice and consent on President Trump’s nominee to fill this vacancy,” McConnell said on the Senate floor. “We will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy’s successor this fall. As in the case of Justice Gorsuch, senators will have the opportunity to meet with President Trump’s nominee, examine his or her qualifications, and debate the nomination.”

This has triggered the Democrats – powerless to do anything to stop the oncoming freight train – into yet another round of Grand Hyperbole.

“We’re looking at the destruction of the Constitution of the United States as far as I can tell based on all the folks he’s been appointing thus far for lifetime appointments,” California Sen. Kamala Harris said Wednesday night. “He’s been appointing ideologues, he’s been appointing people who have refused to agree that Brown v. Board of Education is settled law. The President’s list of potential SCOTUS nominees are complete non-starters. They are conservative ideologues, not mainstream jurists. We cannot and will not accept them to serve on the highest court in the land.”

Oh, Sen. Harris, you can and indeed will accept them, because you have no cards to play. McConnell isn’t going to delay this confirmation vote, and your left-wing voters aren’t informed enough to make the Supreme Court a defining issue. Apocalyptic rhetoric is all you have left, and you’ve blunted even that tool with a year-and-a-half of calling this president a racist Nazi fascist.

If they weren’t actively trying to ruin everything great about the United States, you could almost feel sorry for the Democrats and the predicament they’re in. They really thought that Obama was the first step towards the liberal utopia they’d always dreamed of. Now that dream has turned into so much vapor, and they’ve been left stumbling around in their bedclothes, searching for the light switch. Hold in your giggles.

If you can.
