Democrats: “Trump is Attacking the Free Press!” Also Democrats: “Ban Fox News!”
In an interview with the UK’s Guardian newspaper on Tuesday, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the world would be better off without Rupert Murdoch’s contributions to the media landscape.
De Blasio, who is right there with liberals who think it’s absolutely dreadful when President Trump attacks the media, said that news outlets like Fox News and the New York Post were damaging democracy and were responsible for putting Trump in the White House. He said that if he had unlimited power, he would be happy to wipe these news organizations off the U.S. map forever.
“If you could remove News Corp from the last 25 years of American history, we would be in an entirely different place,” de Blasio said. “We would be a more unified country. We would not be suffering a lot of the negativity and divisiveness we’re going through right now. I can’t ignore that.”
The Guardian pointed out that some might see his animus towards the Murdoch media empire as analogous to what President Trump has been saying about the fake news targeting his administration. De Blasio, however, said there was simply no WAY he was on the same level as Trump.
“There is no comparison between a progressive critique of the media – an overwhelmingly corporate media, by the way – and a president who does not believe in free speech and is trying to undermine the norms of democracy,” he said without explaining exactly where the differences lie. We’re left to assume that the only real difference is that de Blasio is a liberal, Fox News is evil, and so OF COURSE he’s in the right.
It’s especially funny because for as much as President Trump assails the press, we don’t recall him wishing he had the power to remove The New York Times or CNN from the last 25 years of American history. And to go a step further, while reporters and liberal Democrats blast Trump every single day for calling the fake news media the “enemy of the American people,” they certainly didn’t have much to say about Facebook banning Infowars or Twitter censoring conservative journalists.
If one didn’t know better, one might detect a note of hypocrisy!
Remember this the next time you run into a liberal nutjob in your day-to-day life who starts bitching about Trump’s “dangerous” rhetoric against the free press. Remind them that Trump has never once talked about limiting freedom of the press (except within the legal boundaries of libel law). Get their thoughts on Facebook banning Infowars and censoring other conservative news outlets. Let them air their opinions on Fox News, Breitbart, and Sinclair Broadcasting.
You’ll soon find that the left doesn’t give a damn about freedom of speech and they haven’t for a long time. They aren’t scared that Trump is going to use the levers of government to shut down The New York Times and they aren’t scared that Jim Acosta will be attacked at a Trump rally. They are frightened – and rightly so – that the American people are losing faith in a media landscape that is overwhelmingly biased against conservatives.
They are afraid, simply, that they’re on the verge of losing the most powerful cultural and political weapon in their arsenal.
