Florida Democrat: Make Fun of a Congress Member, Go to Jail

Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL), last noticed on the national stage when former White House Chief of Staff correctly referred to her as an “empty barrel,” has her colorful cowboy hat back on and she’s ready to make some more inane remarks for the media.

This week, Wilson was irate to see that Border Patrol officers were mocking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats on a private Facebook group. Instead of simply sticking to a defensible position – that we should expect a higher level of professionalism from our law enforcement officers – Wilson went full crazy, suggesting that we should begin jailing anyone who makes fun of our Washington lawmakers.

Standing outside the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children, Wilson said, “Those people who are online making fun of members of Congress are a disgrace, and there is no need for anyone to think that is unacceptable,” Wilson said. “We’re gonna shut them down and work with whoever it is to shut them down, and they should be prosecuted. You cannot intimidate members of Congress, frighten members of Congress. It is against the law, and it’s a shame in this United States of America.”

Well, we’re going to have to see the statutes that Wilson is referring to. How, exactly, would one legislate that? How would one measure that a congressperson has been “frightened” by an American citizen? Would that include jumping out at them for an on-camera prank? How many years in federal prison does that get you. What if the intimidation is unintentional? Why is it “unacceptable” for people to make fun of members of Congress online? Especially when people like Frederica Wilson make it so damn tempting?

Forget marijuana – we must legalize mockery!

But all of this is to ignore the reality behind Wilson’s remarks. She doesn’t care about people making fun of congresspeople online, she cares about federal law enforcement officers who, having seen plainly that they are openly despised by Democrats, actually returning the emotion. After all, this is a party that was chanting “Abolish ICE!” just a few months ago, and some of them still think that’s a good idea. This is a party whose representative, AOC, went into a detention facility to scream at officers, ignore their commands, and lie to the American people about what she’d seen. Of course the Border Patrol hates  her. Why wouldn’t they make fun of her online?

But at the same time, Wilson’s remarks also belong to that growing pile of examples in which leftists want to shut down any speech they don’t personally care for. Because they know, at the end of the day, that is the only way they can prevail.
