GOP Primary: NeverTrumpers Finally Realize No One Cares About Them

0

There was a time, not that long ago, when the political world was abuzz with the possibility of a principled, fine, upstanding “true” conservative taking on Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020. You know the type. Your Bill Kristols. Your Jeff Flakes. Your Nicolle Wallaces. You know, the REAL Republicans who had their party stolen from them by that evil ogre in the White House. 2020 was going to mark the time when these so-called NeverTrumpers got their act together, put on a valiant primary fight against the president, and wrested party control away from the MAGA dragon forever.

Or not.

From the Washington Examiner:

Never Trump Republicans have all but given up on mounting a serious primary challenge to President Trump in the aftermath of special counsel Robert Mueller’s failure to find Trump campaign collusion with Russia.

“I think there’s broad consensus that no one is moving toward a run,” said Rob Stutzman, a Republican consultant in California who for several months has been involved in discussions about dislodging Trump.

Trump remains broadly popular with Republican voters, and one of the most formidable potential challengers, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, announced over the weekend he would forgo a 2020 bid.

Some Never Trump Republicans are even contemplating quietly redirecting their energy toward boosting Joe Biden, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, saying this strategy might be their only viable option. Many Republicans uncomfortable with Trump view the former vice president, an old-school liberal, as an acceptable Democrat, at least compared to the modern liberals that comprise most of the rest of that party’s crowded field.

So, a couple of things.

One, how is it possible that former Gov. Bill Weld didn’t get the message?

Two, these people really needed the Mueller report to tell them that they had absolutely no chance of dethroning Trump? Wouldn’t the 2016 primaries have been enough of a lesson for them? The complete disintegration of the Weekly Standard? The fact that nearly every anti-Trump Republican has been drummed out of Congress?

Three, the fact that these NeverTrumpers are now going to throw their support behind Biden tells you everything you need to know about where their true loyalties lie. At the very least, they don’t understand the clear and present threat that the Democratic Party’s radical wing poses to this country. Biden may not be a part of that wing, but he’s damn sure not going to do much to push back against it. For that, we need a conservative warrior. We need a Trump.
