Gun Control Fight in Virginia Heats Up as County Forms Militia

The fight between the Democrats in the Virginia state legislature and various counties throughout the state heated up this week when the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors passed two resolutions to buck the imposition of statewide gun control laws. In the first, Tazewell County declared itself a “Second Amendment sanctuary,” joining several other counties. In the second, the board authorized the creation of a well-regulated militia in accord with the verbiage of the Constitution.

“Our position is that Article I, Section 13, of the Constitution of Virginia reserves the right to ‘order’ militia to the localities,” said County Administrator Eric Young. “Therefore, counties, not the state, determine what types of arms may be carried in their territory and by whom. So, we are ‘ordering’ the militia by making sure everyone can own a weapon.”

Mike Hymes, the Southern District Supervisor for Tazewell County told the Herald Courier that Virginians will not be quick to give up their Second Amendment rights.

“Our citizens feel the need to have a gun to protect themselves and their property,” he said. “We live in an area where the nearest deputy might be 45 minutes away.”

The Sheriff is on board as well, telling the local NBC station that the militia resolution “gives us some teeth to be able to act and do something if a law comes out dealing with firearms that we see is illegal.”

Instead of empathizing with Tazewell County and the other 50 Virginia counties that have passed some form of “Second Amendment sanctuary” resolutions, Democrats in Richmond have amped up the rhetoric in an effort to scare counties into compliance.

“If we have constitutional laws on the books and law enforcement officers are not enforcing those laws on the books, then there are going to be some consequences,” Gov. Ralph Northam said on Thursday. “But I’ll cross that bridge if and when we get to it.”

Going a step farther, Rep. Donald McEachin suggested it might be appropriate to invoke the military.

“Ultimately, I’m not the governor, but the governor may have to nationalize the National Guard to enforce the law,” he said. “That’s his call, because I don’t know how serious these counties are and how severe the violations of law will be. But that’s obviously an option he has.”

Imagine being so dedicated to saving lives that you’re willing to send the National Guard into heavily-armed counties to create an all-out confrontation with citizens and police. Truly, Democrats are the heroes that America needs right now.

Stand strong, Virginia. Don’t let these suddenly-powerful leftists in state government rip your rights away. They’ll back down long before you do.
