House Democrats Try to Change the Law to Reduce Trump’s Power

While it’s going absolutely nowhere, considering the GOP-controlled Senate (and the fact that President Trump wields a veto pen), Democrats in the House of Representatives have come up with a pair of bills they say is intended to reign the president in following the commutation of Roger Stone’s sentence. Devised by Jerry Nadler (of course) and the House Judiciary Committee, the two bills are aimed at changing the process of pardons under this president and to change statue of limitations timetables so that Trump can be prosecuted at the end of his presidency.

“The first, H.R. 1627, the Abuse of the Pardon Power Prevention Act, will allow us a measure of transparency into the President’s power to pardon federal crimes and commute federal sentences,” Nadler announced. “If the president uses the powers of his office to shield himself and his family from federal investigations, then the investigators at the Department of Justice should provide us with the materials related to the underlying offense.

“The second bill we will consider, H.R. 2678, the No President is Above the Law Act, is also straightforward,” Nadler said. “While the president is in office, we should pause the clock on the statute of limitations for any crimes he may have committed. Re-election should not be a get-out-of-jail-free card.”

Ridiculous. Will they never stop? Is there literally nothing else to do right now but come up with these stunt-show bills? Why should we even pay Congress if this is how they’re going to use their time on Capitol Hill?

You can agree or disagree with Trump’s decision to commute Stone’s sentence, but for Democrats to pretend that this is the first time a president has ever issued a controversial pardon is a difficult-to-swallow bit of theater. You would have an easier time listing the presidents who haven’t issued such pardons.

Is it a problem? Yeah, sometimes it is. But you’ll notice that Democrats had absolutely no interest in putting that power under a microscope until Donald Trump was the one signing these commutations. This isn’t about furthering the cause of justice; this is about petty revenge against a president who didn’t fall prey to their Russia hoax.

That second bill is a little more interesting. “Re-election should not be a get-out-of-jail-free card,” eh? Hmm, that speaks to a bit of uncertainty about Biden’s chances, does it not? All the polls say that Biden is going to destroy Trump this November, so we have to wonder why House Democrats are so concerned about what might happen if Trump wins.

Maybe they are looking at this chaos in the streets and realizing that there’s no way Americans are going to put the Defund the Police Party into power? Maybe they know that the moment Biden steps on the debate stage with Trump, the president is going to chew him up and spit him out? Maybe they simply remember 2016, when all those polls were just as certain about Hillary Clinton’s chances…

In any case, we’re sure this is an accurate preview of what Democrats will be doing for the next four years if Trump does win re-election. Anyone up for Impeachment, Round 2?
