House GOP Proposes Fines for Protesting Democrats

According to Fox News, House Republicans are circulating a proposal that would slap Democrats with fines for their participation in a gun control “sit-in” this summer. The proposal would introduce new rules to House procedures that would punish Representatives for recording unauthorized video inside the lower chamber. The document reportedly suggests fining participants $500 for the first offense and $2,500 for each subsequent violation.

The proposal stems from a stunt House Democrats pulled back in June while trying to score political points off the terrorist attack in Orlando that claimed the lives of 49 club-goers. Eager to make the massacre about gun control rather than about The Thing That Must Never Be Mentioned, Democrats pressured House Speaker Paul Ryan to hold a vote on anti-gun legislation.

The bills, of course, would not have stopped the perpetrator – Omar Mateen – from carrying out the attack in the exact same way with the exact same gun. But that little piece of logic has never stopped Democrats from profiting from tragedy. Yes, they are serious about weakening the Second Amendment, but they are even more interested in creating the illusion that they are “doing something.” It’s okay if that “something” doesn’t really have anything to do with the problem.

Blocked by Ryan, Democrats decided to put on a show. They took to the floor of the chamber for a 1960’s style “sit-in” protest, forcing the House out of session. Ryan ordered the cameras to be turned off, but Democrats broke out their phones and turned their protest into a social media phenomenon. As liberals cheered from their couches, Republicans fumed.

Now, it may be time for a little payback.

In addition to the rules regarding video, the proposal includes a ban on any protest that would block the well of the House.

“These changes will help ensure that order and decorum are preserved in the House of Representatives so lawmakers can do the people‚Äôs work,” said AshLee Strong, spokeswoman for Paul Ryan.

The danger of this move is that it lets Democrats once again play martyrs to their idiot supporters. Oh, look what the big, bad Republicans are trying to do! We’ll stand firm, no matter what kind of fines we have to face, don’t you worry!

And look at that, it’s already happening. Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, was quick to let his constituents know how heroically defiant he would be.

“Dear @HouseGOP, you can fine me & @HouseDemocrats all the way into bankruptcy for #gunviolence sit-in, but we will always speak for victims,” Swalwell tweeted.

All the way into bankruptcy, eh?

House Republicans might have to put that vow to the test.
