Kamala Harris Has Done (A Lot) More Damage to Our Democracy Than Trump

If there’s one thing that’s clear from the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings regarding the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, it’s that Democrats on the committee viewed this as an opportunity to campaign on television for their Resistance followers across the country. And no one was more guilty of this grandstanding than Sen. Kamala Harris of California, a likely contender for the Democratic Party nomination for president in 2020. Harris not only embarrassed the Senate with her show-off questioning of Kavanaugh and her attempts to disrupt the proceedings on the first day of the hearing, she outright lied to the American people.

On September 7, Harris launched a thousand liberal blogs with a deceptively-edited video clip showing the Supreme Court nominee referring to contraceptives as “abortion-inducing drugs.”

“Kavanaugh chooses his words very carefully, and this is a dog whistle for going after birth control,” Harris wrote. “He was nominated for the purpose of taking away a woman’s constitutionally protected right to make her own health care decisions. Make no mistake – this is about punishing women.”

Harris’ original tweet went viral, attracting more than 30,000 “likes” from every leftist who thinks that Kavanaugh is the canary in the “Handmaid’s Tale” coal mine. Even Hillary Clinton jumped into the mix, retweeting Harris’ lie and adding her own absurd commentary.

But Harris’ tweet was created out of such deception that not even the liberal fact checkers at the Washington Post and PolitiFact could ignore it. The Post gave Harris its worst truthfulness rating – Four Pinocchios – while explaining that in Harris’ video, she cut off some very important context. See, Kavanaugh wasn’t using the term “abortion-inducing drugs” to describe his own outlook on certain forms of contraception; he was merely describing the point-of-view expressed by the plaintiff in a 2013 court battle.

“The issue at hand is Kavanaugh’s reference to ‘abortion-inducing drugs,” wrote the Post’s fact checker. “A plain reading of his sentence, with its reference to ‘they said,’ suggests that he is merely reflecting the plaintiffs’ argument.”

This was not an innocent mistake on the part of Kamala Harris. Nor was it even a bad-faith attempt to wreck this nomination, which is almost certainly going through regardless of what kind of circus the Democrats put on. This was nothing more than a cynical show to gather social media cred and bolster her left-wing reputation for the 2020 contest. You can say the same for Cory Booker’s “I am Spartacus” moment. The Democrats know full-well the Kavanaugh horse is out of the barn; they are merely using these televised hearings as a platform for their partisan clowning.

For all the complaining they do about the harm President Trump is doing to our democratic norms, they certainly don’t have a problem twisting what should be serious, thoughtful hearings into an impromptu campaign rally.
