Maine Liberals Give Non-Doctors the Right to Perform Abortions
While states like Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio are doing what they can to roll back the insanely-permissive abortion laws that have been on the books since Roe v. Wade, other states are going in the opposite direction. In New York and Virginia, Democrats have been on the front lines of expanding abortion “rights” to an unprecedented, harrowing extent. And this week, Maine’s new Democrat governor, Janet Mills, signed her name to a piece of legislation that will do the same there. Thanks to this new law, the authority to perform abortions will now be extended to medical professionals who are not actually doctors.
“Allowing qualified and licensed medical professionals to perform abortions will ensure that Maine women, especially those in rural areas, are able to access critical reproductive health care services when and where they need them from qualified providers they know and trust,” Mills said.
With this law, Maine becomes the fifth state in the nation to allow non-doctors to perform abortions.
“States across the country, including Vermont and New Hampshire, have already eliminated this outdated restriction on abortion care,” said the bill’s sponsor, Democratic state representative Sara Gideon. “This law will allow women to receive the care they need from a provider they trust and eliminate the financial and logistical hurdles they face today.”
We don’t necessarily dispute the ability of a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant, both of which are important medical professionals who are, in some cases, nearly indistinguishable from doctors when it comes to matters of practical medical care. But we take great umbrage in the idea that abortion is a procedure so desperately in need of expansion that we have to let more people get in on the act of performing them. We’re sure that if Planned Parenthood had their way, everyone from your dentist to your hairstylist could give you a quick abortion as an add-on to your regular appointment, but maybe we should be a little more cautious about expanding this particular “right.”
Truth is, there is a huge difference between performing an abortion where everything goes smoothly and one where it does not. And in those latter cases, it’s important to have a doctor on hand to handle hemorrhaging or any other life-threatening medical condition that may arise. We know for a fact that Democrats don’t give a damn about the baby losing his or her life in this procedure, but aren’t they at least supposed to care about the women themselves?
Ah, let’s face it, they only care about satisfying one of their biggest benefactors: The abortion industry. And it’s been clear over the last six months that they are willing to go to the ends of radicalism to please Planned Parenthood and their evil kin. Maine is the latest example, but they won’t be the last.
