No, Kamala Harris, Trump Did Not Sink Biden’s Booming Economy
As per usual, the mainstream media fact-checkers spent so much time after the debate telling viewers about all the misstatements and inaccurate answers Vice President Mike Pence gave that they somehow completely ran out of time to talk about the ones emanating from the other side of the stage. Maybe they were worried that they would be called racist or sexist for daring to call Sen. Kamala Harris out on her lies. Maybe they’re just too lazy to do the research required to fact check both candidates. Or maybe they’re completely in the tank for Biden/Harris.
It’s probably some combination of the three, but the situation remains the same no matter what the explanation is: Harris stretched the truth on a number of occasions on Wednesday night, and her statements remain “unchecked.” Let’s correct that by taking a look at her most obvious deception – that Trump tanked the booming Obama/Biden economy.
“Joe Biden is the one who, during the Great Recession, was responsible for the Recovery Act that brought America back,” Harris said. “And now, the Trump-Pence Administration wants to take credit when they rode the coattails of Joe Biden’s success for the economy that they had at the beginning of their term. Of course, now the economy is a complete disaster, but Joe Biden on the one hand did that. On the other hand, you have Donald Trump who has reigned over a recession that is being compared to the Great Depression.”
The basic idea here: Biden and Obama saved the economy, handed it over to Trump, and he drove it into the ground. This ignores, of course, the fact that we had a completely unexpected pandemic, but it also suggests that the economy handed to Trump was “booming” – exactly the word Biden used in the first debate.
Here’s what the far right-wing, Trump-loving New York Times had to say about that:
The economy was not “booming” in the final year of Mr. Biden’s time as vice president, and Mr. Trump did not “cause” the pandemic recession. When President Barack Obama and Mr. Biden left office, the economy was healthy, though growth had dipped below 2 percent in 2016 in part because of a contraction in business investment stemming in part from a plunge in oil prices rippling through America’s energy industry. Unemployment had fallen steadily.
Under Mr. Trump, economic growth accelerated from 2016, spurred by the fiscal stimulus of tax cuts and increased government spending and continued monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve. The first three years of Mr. Trump’s presidency were similar, in terms of economic and job growth, to the first three years of Mr. Obama’s second term.
The Trump campaign identified no fewer than 24 lies that Harris told on that debate stage, but none were more egregious than this one. The Trump economy was a roaring beast before the Chinese Flu stomped in and ruined everything. The same would have happened if Obama had still been president, except it probably would have been much worse.
To find out how much worse, all you have to do is vote Biden/Harris on November 3rd.
