So Far, So Good: No Coronavirus Spike in Reopening States
While cautioning that we’re still in the early moments of the Phase One reopening plans being experimented with in several U.S. states, Health Secretary Alex Azar said Sunday that the numbers so far are looking fairly promising. In an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” and another one with CBS’s “Face the Nation” this weekend, Azar said that health officials are not seeing a huge spike in infections from those states.
“We are seeing that in places that are opening, we’re not seeing this spike in cases,” Azar told CNN. “We still see spikes in some areas that are, in fact, closed.”
Azar acknowledged that it would be another couple of weeks, however, before the data began telling the true tale of the reopening plans being implemented in such states as Florida and Georgia. He told CBS that officials will have to closely monitor flu-like symptoms spreading throughout the population, keep careful track of hospitalization rates, and ramp up testing of asymptomatic people.
He said that the Trump administration would take a backseat role in terms of advising states on their individualized reopening plans.
“These are very localized determinations. There should not be a one size fits all to reopening but reopen we must because it’s not health versus the economy. It’s health versus healthy,” he said.
Asked about images that have come out from certain areas of the nation where people are clearly disregarding social distancing recommendations, Azar was dismissive.
“I think in any individual instance you’re going to see people doing things that are irresponsible. That’s part of the freedom that we have here in America,” he said on CNN.
Exactly. Of course, as The Babylon Bee astutely noted this week, Reminder: Adolf Hitler Also Wanted To Go Outside And Do Things. You can’t trust these Americans and their damn…freedom and stuff!
The truth is, we most likely will see some sort of spike in infections over the coming weeks. That’s basically baked into the plan. Facts are facts, and the facts say that until or unless we get a vaccine, this virus is still out there. The more we get back to our normal lives, the more infections we’re going to see. The media is going to relentlessly pound the doom and gloom drums every time there’s an increase in cases, but what’s the alternative? We all stay inside until it’s “safe”? What’s the country going to look like at the end of THAT? You may wish you’d died from COVID-19 by the time the “experts” say it’s truly safe to come out of your home.
All we can do now is take reasonable precautions, wear masks when appropriate, avoid crowds and shaking hands, and hope for the best.
