Trump Puts a Long-Overdue End to Obama’s Amnesty

According to reports from Politico and other insider outlets, President Donald Trump has finally decided to bring Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to an end. Though he is expected to compromise with his congressional critics by giving DREAMers a six-month window before enforcement ends, the president has – after months of see-sawing on the subject – finally made the right decision.

While Trump is expected to take an enormous amount of heat for ending the program – liberals, Silicon Valley CEOs, and even many Republicans are already bashing his decision – he ultimately had to come down on the side of the Constitution. With an assist from Texas state attorneys, who were threatening to sue the administration, and advice from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who informed the president that the Justice Department would not defend DACA in court, Trump is scheduled to announce this week that 800,000 illegal immigrants will no longer enjoy federal protections signed by Barack Obama.

Those protections were put in place illegally. While “prosecutorial discretion” is a privilege within the president’s wheelhouse, DACA went beyond prioritizing criminal illegal aliens for deportation. Not only did it put these young men and women out of the reach of ICE, it conferred upon them benefits such as work permits that were not the White House’s to grant. That made the executive order plainly unconstitutional, and it – along with its successor, DAPA – contributed to the catastrophic 2014 and 2016 election results for Democrats.

Many in the Republican leadership have called on President Trump to extend the protections. In June, Sen. Marco Rubio said Congress should take up the issue so that DREAMers could have permanent amnesty.

“My hope is that as part of this process we can work on a way to deal with this issue and solve it through legislation, which is the right way to do it and the constitutional way to do it,” Rubio said.

By delaying the end of the program by sixth months, Trump is giving amnesty-minded Republicans a chance to put their money where their mouths are. You want the DREAMers to stay? The ball’s in your court. You can be assured that every single Democrat will vote for it, so all you have to do is be willing to put your name – and your political career – on the line for these illegal immigrants. If you care that much, here’s your opportunity to prove it.

And so it should be. If there are to be modifications to our existing immigration laws, they need to come through the halls of Congress. That’s how it’s supposed to work. Then we can have an actual public debate about whether or not it makes sense to keep or remove these protections. Right now, the important thing is to restore the rule of law.

By all accounts, that’s exactly what President Trump is set to do.
