Unacceptable: Trump Opponent Suggests Death Penalty for the President
In remarks that should disqualify him from a race he has no chance of winning in the first place, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld said this week that President Trump is guilty of treason, a crime for which – he noted carefully – the only punishment is death. Weld is challenging Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020, but if this is the kind of steady, stable leadership he means to contrast with Trump’s wild and improvisational style, we find it hard to imagine any conservatives finding him to be a reasonable alternative.
Weld, of course, was discussing Trump’s phone call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and whatever supposed promises or pressure he put on his counterpart to investigate the Bidens on corruption charges. On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program on Monday, the Republican challenger said that there was a clear legal remedy for Trump’s actions.
“Talk about pressuring a foreign country to interfere with and control a U.S. election, it couldn’t be clearer. And that’s not just undermining democratic institutions, that is treason,” Weld said. “It’s treason pure and simple. And the penalty for treason under the U.S. Code is death. That’s the only penalty.
“The penalty under the Constitution is removal from office, and that might look like a pretty good alternative to the president if he could work out a plea deal,” he continued.
So, what exactly is Weld suggesting? That Trump negotiate a deal with Nancy Pelosi and Congress that if he steps aside from the president, he gets to keep his life? For mentioning Biden’s corruption to a foreign leader? Is he serious? We’ve seen the left say some crazy things over the past week as it pertains to this situation, but we haven’t come across a Democrat going this far outside the lines. Where do these NeverTrump kooks come from?
By the way, the U.S. legal code outlines other possible penalties for treason, so Weld is factually wrong as well as mentally bankrupt. Oh, and there’s also no court on the planet that would convict Trump of “treason” for this scenario, even if it’s exactly what the president’s worst critics say it is. Which, judging by three years’ worth of fake news, we highly doubt.
But don’t hold your breath waiting for the idiots on the “Morning Joe” panel to correct him. Instead, Elise Jordan, another NeverTrump numbskull, pushed Weld to expound on his ludicrous claim.
“Governor Weld, you went a little bit further than just impeachment in your prior comments, and I just want to continue with that a bit,” Jordan said. “You said that Donald Trump has committed treason and the penalty for treason under American law is death. Do you — what’s the legal framework here? Have you looked into this? What — how do you see this proceeding?”
Have you looked into this? LOL.
“Well, the legal framework is under the U.S. Code,” Weld said. “The only penalty for treason is death. It’s spelled out in a statute. Under the Constitution as you know, grounds for removal from office, impeachment and removal from any federal office, are treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. […] We’ve got treason and we don’t have to dribble around the court. We can go right for the hoop.”
Uh-huh. Please do.
Let us know how that works out for you.
