War on Faith: High-Schooler Suspended for Saying “Bless You” in Class

Sometimes there are stories so insipid that you think you must be dreaming when you read them. Such is the case with this one out of Dyer County, Tennessee, where a high school student named Kendra Turner was given in-school suspension after she said “bless you” in response to another student’s sneeze. The teacher, who has yet to be publicly identified, apparently took great offense to this tried-and-true custom, and allegedly told Turner that “we’re not going to have godly speaking in her class.”

When Turner told the teacher that she had a constitutional right to say it, she was told to go to the office. There, administrators told the girl to finish out the class in ISS. Officials told Turner’s parents that she was suspended for being aggressive and disruptive in class, words that apparently go by other meanings in that part of Tennessee.

According to Turner’s youth pastor, this isn’t the first time the teacher has overstepped her bounds when it comes to attacking her students’ belief in God. “There were several students that were talking about this particular faculty member there that was very demeaning to them in regard to their faith,” said the pastor, Becky Winegardner.

Many of Turner’s classmates went to school the following day wearing homemade “bless you” shirts in support of their friend. Turner was insistent that she didn’t want to cause trouble for the teacher, but that she was adamant about standing up for her rights and her faith.

“It’s alright to defend God and it’s our constitutional right because we have a freedom of religion and freedom of speech,” Turner told WMC Action News 5.

Even without any further information about the identity of the teacher in question, does even a single reader doubt that she is a raging liberal? That must be a difficult path to follow in a place like Dyer County, Tennessee, whose population went 71% in favor of Mitt Romney in the 2012 election, but she doesn’t get any points for being in the minority. Instead, this teacher seems to be one of many Americans who have forgotten the country’s proud religious history, eager to remake the world as an atheist utopia.

While the separation of church and state has a prominent and important role to play in our country’s development, atheists and misguided lawyers have long overplayed its significance. In their attempt to scrub all mentions of religion from the government, they have successfully run roughshod on the rights of Americans to celebrate their country’s founding faith and the religious freedom guaranteed by the constitution.

What’s especially maddening is that the mainstream media would take this story and run with it if Kendra Turner was a Muslim. Liberal crocodile tears are never bigger or wetter than when an American Muslim has their rights infringed by an intolerant, bigoted establishment figure. Since she’s a Christian, you can expect that this story will die on the vine before it ever gets any traction. It’s just how it is in Obama’s America. Maybe if she’d said “Peace be upon you” after the sneeze, she would have been allowed to stay in class.
