Government Worker FIRED for Having a Concealed Carry License
Hmm, did we have a Rip Van Winkle nap and wake up in some kind of dystopian future where Americans no longer have the right to bear arms? We must have, because what happened to a young woman named Storm Durham in Virginia this week could not have occurred in the America we know and love. Even with liberals running around trying everything they can do to ban “assault rifles” and demonize the NRA, this is like something out of a scary sci-fi novel. Because Durham wasn’t just fired from her government job for packing a gun – she was, in fact, NOT carrying a gun. She was fired merely for having a concealed carry permit!
Virginia recognizes and issues concealed carry permits, licenses which give the owner the right to carry a concealed weapon on them at (most) times. And when Durham procured her license, it’s unlikely that she knew that she was endangering her employment with Roanoke City Social Services. But she was fired last week for the crime of having a government-issued permit, deemed a safety threat, and escorted off the premises. She recounted the ordeal in a lengthy Facebook post on Friday.
“I was fired today,” she wrote. “I was fired today due to having a concealed carry permit. Was my gun on me? No. Has it ever been on me during my job, or visits, or anything related to work? No. When I told them that it has never been on me during work, what did they say? ‘How do we know that?’ Search me. Do I have a criminal record? No. Do I, (yes the 22 year old blonde who is 5’2 and about 140 pounds who loves everything Disney, pink, and basic), come across as a threat to you? If you know me I’m pretty sure you’ve never been shaking in your boots due to my very presence.
“But today, I was escorted by not one, not two, but three Roanoke City Police Officers to my office where I packed up months of thank you cards, and pictures of kids I’ve helped,” she continued. “I was escorted by officers who have been with me on visits where I placed a child with a relative due to risks, or when I was hugged by a child because they finally felt safe again. I was told to pack immediately and that I could not even use the bathroom to take a minute for myself because of my ‘serious safety concerns to the building.’ I have a concealed carry permit. I own guns. I hunt. I target shoot. I represent Women hunters and outdoorswomen. Does that make me a criminal?”
To make matters worse, Durham’s post revealed that she doesn’t just own a gun because she enjoys hunting or outdoor activities; she carries concealed because she is a sexual assault survivor. And her right to protect herself has now been compromised (illegally, we have to believe) by her employer – the government of Virginia.
We know there are two sides to every story. Perhaps Durham’s employer has another view of what happened. We’d love to hear it, because as things stand now, it looks like Storm has a hell of a lawsuit to bring against Roanoke County and the State of Virginia.
