Barely Half of Voters Think Biden Has What It Takes to Debate Trump
According to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports, a dismal 54% of voters believe that Joe Biden has what it takes to go head-to-head with President Donald Trump in a debate. Obviously concerned about Biden’s ability to meet the considerable cognitive demands that go along with a presidential debate, voters appear to believe that the former vice president will be demolished by Trump. In a national survey of 1,000 voters, Rasmussen found that only slightly more than half of respondents think Biden is ready for a debate.
“How important is it for Joe Biden and Donald Trump to hold one or more televised presidential debates this fall?” asked Rasmussen.
68% of respondents said that it was “very important” that Biden and Trump have at least one of these debates.
“Is Joe Biden capable of defeating Donald Trump?”
It was to this question that 54% of respondents said they had serious doubts about Biden’s capabilities. A full 38% were quite sure that Biden would be defeated. Another 11% weren’t sure either way – understandable seeing as how the public has seen very little of the Democratic candidate in recent months. Who really knows what kind of cognitive shape the guy is in?
“Would it help or hurt Biden’s candidacy if he refused to debate Trump? Or would it have no impact?” Rasmussen asked in a third question.
56% of respondents said that Biden would suffer if he chickened out of a debate; only 9% thought Biden would get a boost if he pulled out of the confrontation.
So yeah, that puts Biden in a tough position. He’s headed for a mental battle that nearly half of Americans think he is deeply unqualified for. Considering how much attention and power we allot to these presidential debates, this could spell real trouble for Biden’s chances in November. Granted, the mainstream media will do everything possible to skew the perception of his debate performance, but if enough people tune in for themselves, that shouldn’t matter all that much. We’re sure the viral videos on YouTube, showing Biden’s more…interesting…moments will stunt his campaign as well.
That is, if YouTube doesn’t decide to delete them.
“The Left is terrified of Joe Biden coming out of his basement to debate @realDonaldTrump,” tweeted GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. “But if Biden cannot debate, he has no business even running for President. Period!”
In a column last week, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman urged Biden to pull out of the debates unless Trump agreed to release his tax returns and have a “real-time fact-checking team” monitor the debates for the viewing public.
“He should not go into such a high-stakes moment ceding any advantages to Trump,” Friedman wrote. “Trump is badly trailing in the polls, and he needs these debates much more than Biden does to win over undecided voters.
It’s pretty bad when your chosen candidate is “ceding advantages” by showing up to debate under the normal rules of the thing. Pretty bad when you perceive Biden’s chances as being greater the less he is seen by the public.
Pretty bad…but undoubtedly accurate.
