Biggest October Surprise of All Time?
When Hillary Clinton and NBC got together for that Access Hollywood tape release at the beginning of the month, it seemed unlikely that we would see another October surprise of that scale. A secret tape showing Donald Trump using language most of us are…uh, not exactly comfortable with our president using? Yeah, things weren’t going to get any more shocking than that.
Oh, how wrong we were.
With only eleven days left until the election – with millions of early votes already cast – FBI Director James Comey dropped an October surprise that may go down as the biggest of all time. In a formal letter to Congress, Comey announced that the FBI was re-initiating its investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.
Boom.
To be a fly on the wall when Hillary heard the news. To see the bulging veins in her forehead when she started screaming at Huma Abedin, whose carelessness is apparently responsible for the new arm of the investigation. The FBI learned of the emails while investigating her estranged husband, Anthony “Carlos Danger” Weiner, who is suspected of chatting with an underage girl. Even if Hillary does somehow get elected in spite of all of this, Abedin’s place in the White House may not be as assured as it once was.
But that may be academic, because Hillary’s chances of winning the presidency just got much, much smaller. And by the way she’s going after the FBI director himself, she knows it.
“It’s pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election,” Clinton said this weekend. “In fact, it’s not just strange; it’s unprecedented and it is deeply troubling.”
Partisanship aside, all Americans deserve to have as much information about these revelations as can possibly be released. Both Democrats and Republicans are calling on Comey to release more details about the new emails, and the mainstream media – so protective and caring of Comey after he let Hillary off the hook this summer – is beginning to turn on the FBI director.
Comey’s obligation, of course, is to the truth, and he’s not legally obligated to rush this investigation. It’s unfortunate, but that’s not his fault. Blame Weiner. Blame Abedin.
But most of all, blame Hillary Clinton. She made this mess herself.
Now it’s up to the American people to recognize that even though she skirted justice this July, she is guilty of endangering national security and she’s not to be trusted with the keys to the White House.
