California Dems Pass Law to Make Abortion Pills Available at Universities

California prides itself as the land of progress – or at least “progressivism” – and that was apparently the guiding doctrine that led Democrat lawmakers in the state Senate to pass SB24 on Friday, a piece of legislation that would mandate that all public universities provide access to the abortion pill for any students who wish to end their pregnancies before the 10-week mark. The measure will now go to the desk of California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

According to State Sen. Connie Leyva (D-Chino), who authored the bill, students must have access to the fetus-killing pills so they don’t have to “choose between delaying important medical care or having to travel long distances or miss classes or work.”

“In a time when states across our country are rolling back women’s health care and access to abortion, California continues to lead the nation to protect every individual’s right to choose,” Leyva proudly proclaimed in a statement. “SB24 reaffirms the right of every college student to access abortion.”

That must be one of those hidden “rights” you can only find in the Constitution with a special Democrat Decoder Pen.

Under the terms of the bill, the state would use money from private donors to fill campus health clinics with ultrasound equipment so that medical abortions can be given to students who request them. If those funds run out, California taxpayers will either have to make up the difference or universities will have to bump up student health fees to cover the gap.

Not everyone is on board with this wretched scheme to bring these pills to California’s students.

“We also are very concerned about the conscience rights of people — students whose fees will be used to underwrite these health centers,” said Kristi Hamrick of Students for Life of America.

It would sound as extreme as it is, of course, if California were pushing to bring surgical abortions to every university in the state. But Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocates have been very successful in portraying chemical abortion as a safe, convenient alternative to the operation.

In truth, it is nothing of the kind. This isn’t Plan B, for whatever you may think of that medication. This is a combination of two pills – Mifepristone and Misoprostol – which are taken hours apart. The first one inhibits the release of progesterone, starving the baby in the womb. The second induces labor to eject the corpse. The combination does not add up to a pretty picture for women who take them – they are besieged with cramps, contractions, and bleeding. Sometimes, the entire episode can drag on for weeks, not hours, and result in complications, incomplete abortions, and even death.

By making these pills available to any California college student, Democrats are not just directly expanding abortion access; they are furthering the propaganda that portrays chemical abortions as easy and harmless. They are neither, and they have no business being offered at our institutions of higher learning.
