Leave it to the man President Trump has cited as the dumbest man on television to find a way to justify the deranged mob scene that drove Sen. Ted Cruz and his wife out of a Washington, D.C. restaurant this week. CNN’s Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo discussed the incident on Tuesday evening, a day after a group calling themselves “Smash Racism DC” harangued and protested Cruz for his support of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Following the Maxine Waters Template for making public life a living hell for Republican politicians, the protesters accused Cruz of being heartless towards “survivors” of sexual assault and harassed him until he and his wife had had enough and left without eating their meal.
Lemon thought all of this was simply part of the territory.
“I don’t like it,” he said, “but it is one reason I’m not a public official, that I’m not running for office. In a way I think it goes with the territory. I don’t like that they were blocking his wife, but that’s what he signed up for.
“As a strict constitutionalist, which Ted Cruz is, he knows it is protected under the First Amendment,” Lemon continued. “I don’t like it. I wouldn’t want it to happen to me. I don’t like it happening to his wife. But that’s what he signed up for. That’s part of the deal.”
Cuomo replied: “I don’t know that that’s what he signed up for, but that may be what the price is for being in public service, that there’s a different standard for him. Is it right that they do it this way? What did they achieve by doing it this way? Do you think they changed Ted Cruz’s mind? Did they raise awareness to something that was positive, or did they raise awareness to something that makes their effort look bad?”
Chris Cuomo has said plenty of dumb stuff on his television program, but you put him next to the idiot Lemon and he looks like a Rhodes Scholar.
At this point, Lemon reveals his true colors.
“If you run for office and you propose policies that are detrimental to people, as Americans you have the right to tell your public officials that you don’t like it,” he said.
Well, we’d like one of those protesters to explain which of Cruz’s policies were detrimental to them? Has Cruz ever signed legislation that would prevent them from, say, eating a quiet dinner with their families in public? No, he has a philosophical disagreement with these folks about the role of the U.S. government and the values that should characterize a Supreme Court justice. These people in that restaurant had their chance to have a say about that disagreement; it was called Election Day 2016. Another one will come around in a month or so.
But these hateful morons aren’t interested in voting. They are interested in making spectacles of themselves for a social media audience. And the more hostile they can make their interactions with Republican politicians, the more attention they’ll get. When you really stop and think about the implications of that scenario, it shows you why it is so irresponsible for people like Maxine Waters to encourage them. And why Don Lemon is such an idiot for writing it off as just part of the job.
