CNN Needs to Fess Up to Their Fake News Mistakes
We don’t expect investigative journalism to always get it right.
In fact, if you’ve ever been the subject of even a local newspaper story, you know that reporters cannot and will not get every detail correct. Hell, even if you know more about a given random subject than the average person and then see a mainstream, for-the-masses news article about that subject, you will almost certainly cringe at the amount of stuff they get wrong in the piece. Some of it, if not most of it, may be insignificant to the broader picture that the story is painting, but it stands out to someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. And from those instances, you can assume that just about every story printed in every newspaper gets something wrong. That’s just a fact of life, and a side effect of humans being unable to be experts in everything all at once. It’s not “fake news,” it’s just the nature of the beast.
So it doesn’t bother us too much when a major news outlet like CNN gets something wrong. But it bothers us greatly when that “something” is a bombshell story that has major implications for our political system. If CNN prints a story and mistakenly refers to Omarosa has having been on “The Apprentice” five times instead of four, it’s no biggie. It may be wrong but it’s not materially important. If, on the other hand, CNN tells us that Michael Cohen is prepared to tell the FBI that Donald Trump knew about a meeting with the Russians beforehand, well, that’s a whole ‘nother ball of wax. That’s a detail we expect CNN to get right.
Or at least, we would have expected it once upon a time.
These days, though, we’re long past the point of giving CNN the benefit of the doubt. They’ve exhibited so much bias over the last two years that they have gone from simply being a poor source for news to being an active wing of the Democratic Party. And so when they screwed this one up, we weren’t even surprised. Freshly disappointed? Perhaps. Angry? Yes. But surprised? Not in the least. This is par for the course when it comes to this misbegotten network, and it’s just like them to “stand by their story” after their OWN SOURCE – Cohen’s attorney, Lanny Davis – admitted he was just making stuff up.
We expect a Clinton-associated lawyer like Davis to lie, cheat, and steal his way into the headlines. We do not expect news organizations to take him at his word. CNN claims they have “independent sources” who confirmed that Cohen would tell Mueller about the Trump Tower meeting, but if you believe that, well, we just don’t know what to say. They are circling the wagons at the exact wrong time – shielding themselves from “fake news” criticism by doubling down on what is, verifiably, FAKE NEWS!
This network has become an absolute joke. Why anyone is still watching them is beyond us.
