Beer Company Founder: Corporate Tax Rate Is Too High

107

Beer didn’t originate in America, but it has a long and storied tradition right alongside hot dogs and apple pie. Samuel Adams beer is the embodiment of that tradition: a true, made-in-the-USA product that represents one of the most successful independent breweries in the country. Whether you’re a fan of the Boston Beer Company or not, what founder Jim Koch told the U.S. Senate this week should trouble you greatly. Koch, speaking to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Investigations on Thursday, said that the current U.S. corporate tax rate was prohibitive to stateside success.

“We are vulnerable because we currently report all of our income in the United States and pay a tax rate of about 38 percent on that income,” Koch said. “Because of our broken corporate tax system, I can honestly say that I will likely be the last American owner of the Boston Beer Company.”

Koch went on to say that 90 percent of American beers were produced by companies under foreign ownership. He said that the tax code was making it extremely difficult for U.S.-based businesses to compete with overseas competition. If the Boston Beer Company were to relocate to another country, it would be given a tax break of up to 13 percent.

“There are solutions,” said Koch. “Cut the highest-in-the-world U.S. corporate tax rate to the mid-20s. And bring America’s international tax system in line with the rest of the industrialized world, by allowing U.S. companies to bring their overseas earnings home without additional taxes—just like the British and Canadians (among others) allow their businesses to do.”

This is a problem, of course, that goes well beyond the future of one brewery. Corporations in all sectors have been fleeing the United States in recent years, hoping to pad their profit margin by reducing their tax burden. President Obama has attacked these companies as “unpatriotic,” but whatever limited public backlash came out of those attacks quickly abated. Americans aren’t stupid, and we aren’t going to be conned into supporting an outrageous tax code just because the president puts it in emotional terminology. Business is business. And when your own country wants to penalize you for winning, what patriotic duty do you have to stay put?

If you want to foster a “made in the USA” economic culture, you have to do more than talk the talk. You have to limit regulations, devise the tax code so that it invites corporate patriotism, and make it easy on companies to make a profit. You can’t necessarily run the United States like a business, but it wouldn’t hurt to have some politicians with business experience in leadership. Or at least politicians who aren’t actively mistaken about what makes the economy go around.

I tried to get some stock on the first offering but was refused. If I had got some what would it be worth now. I forgot what the amount was but it was around a few hundred dollars…

Corporations from all sectors of business are fleeing the United States because our Government has become socialistic and corrupt. They leave simply because there are better working conditions elsewhere. They leave because it is a good business decision.

Agreed and the media is supporting the socialist government by and large (very few exceptions)!!!!!

Not better working conditions but ways to avoid taxes. The bad part is you and I cannot use those methods.

      1. RMCSRET says

Really, Yes they leave because of taxes, and they leave because of the MOUTAIN of
REGULATIONS that are imposed on them that also costs additional MILLIONS of dollars.
FREE CORPORATIONS to MANUFACUTURE on a level playing field and you once
again see manufacturing return to the USA.

And let’s not forget cheap labor and the influence of the World Bank and IMF.

      2. MAHB001 says

True, but we take advantage of the lower cost of goods…

Businesses have to survive first, that is why they are leaving. The working environment is better in other Countries due to the Taxes this Socialist Big Government places on them.

        1. cvxxx says

There is a huge difference in wages. Taxes are minor compared to wages and benefits paid. Because many US companies have HQ in another low tax country wages become the deciding issue. That is why the Drive for H1B visas is becoming a real problem. Foreign workers are cheaper and they send money home to our allies India to raise the GNP of India.

The formula that is used to determine where a company resides has many variables, always changing and is complex.

Taxes, available workers, weather, resources, and dozens of other things are all mixed together.

Politicians, taxes, and Government regulations are huge factors.

I believe our Government has gotten caustic to small businesses, that is why they are moving or not starting up.

The solution to this problem is smaller government, not a bigger more intrusive one like 0bama has fostered.

    1. PayTheMan says

Dems are big government when it comes to corporate oversight and taxation but small government when it comes to what we do in our bedrooms and lives. Both sides are big govt but in distinct ways. Dems are fine with entitling poor people but not corporations… repubs are fine with entitling corps but not poor people. Just two sides of the same coin… but with massive distinctions in how it all plays out.

      1. Steve Crawford says

Are you aware that the US have a GOP control Congress that could change the corporate tax? You racist idiots need to start blaming the azz holes in charge. The GOP congress who are controlled by lobbyists and billionaires, do not want to lower the corporate taxes, so that they can justify moving the corporations, their paid salaries and investments tax free overseas. It is a GOOD EXCUSE that both the DEM’s & the GOP want to keep. And the TPP will “sock it to you” Americans. Somebody has to be for the middle class and those who are lower class that want to move up. Which means that illegal immigrants SHOULD NOT be hired for any state or Federal jobs, it should be a heavy penalty to hire them.
Raise the minimum wage to $15 over three years, by 2018. Revise the Welfare System, Food Stamps and disability programs. Make many recipients work. Allow Ex-cons to work on some state and federal contract jobs. Remove waste from city, state and federal agencies programs, including the military.
Improve the education in schools, provide free or reduced cost for two colleges for AMERICAN CITIZENS, and provide access to lower priced Healthcare Care & and prescriptions for ALL American citizens. I GUESS THESE ARE SOCIALIST IDEAS.
Politicians are like diapers, whey they get full of it, it is time to change.

        1. PayTheMan says

Amen brother. I agreemwith your every syllable. Bernie is my man…. Or if youmare running… Maybe you.

        2. MAHB001 says

          Funny thing,

Conservatives are just figuring out that the Republicans in charge are nothing more than socialist in conservative clothing.

The Republican Party has been taken over by liberal progressives, of the same socialist ilk that the Democrats are made of.

When you say all that crap about the Republican leadership, the same words can be applied to the controlling interests of the Democrat party.

When it comes to leadership, Democrats = Republicans = Socialists…

When it comes to what the We the People that make up each party think.

          Democrats = socialists = Big Government…
          Republicans = Capitalists

          1. Cheryl Lynn Smith-Bell says

The RINOS running the Republican party are going to bite the dust. WE the People are fed up with the go-along-to get-along ways and will not allow more of the same. It maybe way past time for a real peoples party to rise up and put them in their place, which is out of government. Term limits are a good start on eleminating career politicians, which are not what our founders had in mind. This is why Trump’s truth telling is blasting and scaring the hell out of both parties.

          2. MAHB001 says

Trump is akin to the Tea Party. He is not controlled by either party.

            I like that…

        3. Bullfrogman says

          Play that race card

        4. mac12sam12 says

I believe Obama raised the corporate tax when he had both houses filled with democrats. A tax on corporations are paid for by the consumer.
The $15 minimum wage that is pushed by the left is a distraction from the fact that most of the new hires are 29 hours or less. Raising it would start the automation craze and also cause layoffs.
I agree with you about revising the welfare system and the waste that is in government.
About your free or reduced costs for college. Professors and college administrators don’t work pro bono so the free or reduced costs will be on the taxpayer’s dime.
One more thing, stop the race card crap. It’s race conscious people like you that are the problem.

        5. Rosech Levy says

I think you will find that most of us agree that Congress is a snake pit of lookalikes, thinkalikes, etc. which is why we want Trump as president to help us take back our country and get rid of those employees who think they own us. NOT!

      2. MAHB001 says

Dems are small government when it comes to what we do in our bedrooms and lives??

That is laughable. Dems are for big government period. They tell us what to purchase for healthcare, they tell you what to do with your money. They are for taking your money and distributing it to the poor, AFTER, they have skimmed off what they need for themselves.

That is what socialism is. Slavery to the state.

small government, when it comes to our lives…. hahahahaha

      3. MAHB001 says

After a second read of your statement I would say you are correct, with the exception as to where we place blame.

I place blame on socialism creeping into our system as the evil in the system.

You seem to see the evil in the system as Capitalism.

This is by design by the way. Socialists HAVE to get Americans to reject Capitalism in order to instill socialism in its place.

The Socialist know that socialism will fall to communism. In fact without the removal of evil people from this world, socialism is communism.

        The massive distinction is:
        Democrats = Socialism
        Republicans = Capitalism.

Ask yourself, now that socialism has been in play for 7.5 years in America, are you any better off?
As a once middle class person, my experience is NO. HELL NO.

        1. Spongebob says

Yes its socialism promoted by our great muslim dictator from kenya, raise taxes and give it to illegals, transform america

        2. Rosech Levy says

Correction. Demos published their 1963 Communist Manifesto and have so far been very successful. Our first mistake was not believing McCarthy when he told us there were both socialists and communists in our Congress, etc. If we don’t stop them now, they win, we lose and being a slave in either of two societies does not excite me. I lived and worked under socialism and it ain’t pretty and my spouse escaped communism and that is less pretty. We have let our employees turn themselves into our bosses and now we must kick butts and get control again and very, very soon in any way we can!

          1. MAHB001 says

Yes, you are correct about the difference between socialism and communism.

I try to simplify things such that the lemming democrats will understand.

I believe that what Lenin said is true…

“The goal of socialism is communism.”
            Lenin

In the book, “The Naked Communist” by Cleon Skousen 1958, there is a list of 45 agenda items that the Soviet Union has been following to set up a socialist state in the United States.

            15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

  4. Croco Dile says

John Taylor Gatto in History of American Education :

One task it performed with brilliance was to sharply curtail the American entrepreneurial spirit, a mission undertaken on perfectly sensible grounds, at least from a management perspective. As long as capital investments were at the mercy of millions of self-reliant, resourceful young entrepreneurs running about with a gleam in their eye, who would commit the huge flows of capital needed to continually tool and retool the commercial/ industrial/ financial machine? As long as the entire population could become producers, young people were loose cannons crashing around a storm-tossed deck, threatening to destroy the corporate ship; confined, however, to employee status, they became suitable ballast upon which a dependable domestic market could be erected.

The school transformation had been ordered by “certain industrialists and the innovative who were altering the nature of the industrial process.”

The tax rate is only too high for those that cannot afford to buy a politicians regulation.

    1. RobertNorwood says

Well that’s the idea isn’t it? Carly Fiorina spelled it out exactly. Crush smaller businesses so that only huge corporations can survive. Cut the tax rate and abolish Dodd/Frank.

CARLY DIDN’T GET FIRED FROM HP FOR BEING SMART

        1. RobertNorwood says

So you’re saying they hired her because she’s dumb? Makes no sense and getting fired from a big corporation can mean a lot of things. Apple got rid of Steve Jobs. Sometimes it’s about personalities and blame assignment. In 2005 HP stock had lost more than half its value, while overall the nasdaq had plunged 26 percent owing to the tech bubble bursting. Laying it at Carly’s feet is weak. Unless one has been on the inside and know what corporate wonks can be like one should reserve judgement. Truth is HP wasn’t doing so good and the footprint she created has made them very successful.
All that said, it’s an old story that few people understand and the only thing liberals have on her which it ain’t much. To be sure, she didn’t get anyone killed, didn’t dodge bullets in Bosnia, and getting an answer out of her, unlike Hillary Clinton, does not resemble getting an the truth from a four year old who’s been caught out on something.

          1. SARGENT SHAW says

I agree with Robert about your language. Making personal attacks makes you look like the stupid one.

I work for the former HP and I can agree with Sgt Shaw that Carly is not a good leader. In fact, many think she is the worst tech CEO of all time. Not someone I would want running the country. Timing was part of it, but even after the tech bubble popped, many companies had a better plan for success than Carly did. HP used to be a top business brand name. Now people cringe when they think of the low quality. Thankfully, Keysight is no longer tied to the HP name. Our products made HP a great name and trusted brand. The computer and printer division ruined it.

Exactly Mike, and once smaller businesses pay the extortion fees, i.e., regulation fees, the regulations are lifted. No one can start a business and allow that business to grow because the big corporate owners don’t like competition, especially Rockefeller who stated competition is a sin…The government keeps growing and the citizens and small businesses are taxed out of their homes and existence. Now that should be considered a sin.

  6. SouthernPatriot says

When larger business cabal with their government handlers can crush smaller to medium sized businesses, they are killing about 70 percent of the employment opportunities in the United States, putting far more people dependent upon the government…more food stamps, more housing payments, more strain on the taxpayers.

Small business is the backbone of America. In my area, well over 2 dozen new small businesses have opened in the past year, as I travel throughout neighboring states, I see the same thing. I try to purchase what I need from these businesses and find all the proprietors say a similar thing: government regulation and excessive taxes hurt their ability to continue in business and their ability to expand.

  7. RGS48 says

Taxes and regulations are killing America. While Obama is destroying all he can. He wants us to be brought to our knees. You can see it in his eyes his demeanor. His every move has hate for America. Mark my word all you that have not been convinced will wake up by what he does in the next year.

You know, I never bring it up myself but it is irritating. Bad enough when folks cannot make a cogent argument or repeat what we all know they got to put it all in caps. There are other devices like exclamation points, quotations, nuance and turn of phrase. Unfortunately those things do require some education.

  9. DollyT says

He is “Right On”. These Taxes have driven companies to take their jobs overseas. Get rid of most of those taxes and get companies to return our manufacturing base back to the USA and if they don’t return THEN slap them with a large “Import TAX”.

Hey Dolly do you have a clue as to who pays the IMPORT TAX on items? YOU/

If we lowered all taxes to 10-15% for corporations and individuals, this country would explode with growth and tax revenues would increase bc of the volume of business being done here! Lowering these taxes to zero would make us the most prosperous nation in history. Our governments could live off Ad Valorem or value added tax which only taxes goods when they are sold… eliminating sales taxes would also be a huge plus for the sales of products to those companies that make things people consume! think about it…

    1. cvxxx says

      Bring forth the proof?

      1. fred says

Every single time taxes have been lowered the econometric models showed at least a two percent growth rate or HIGHER in this country since the Income Tax was established as “temporary measure” in 1913. Look it up, you’re on the internet now! Why should I have to always do the WORK for idiots like YOU? Do you know what a balanced budget is? We need to tell DC we want a surplus budget and to be much more frugal in their spending habits with OUR money! Keep your four word responses in your feeble little brain next time and stop bothering those of us trying to stop they tyranny! Do your OWN research next time, A$$—e!

President Obama has attacked these companies as “unpatriotic, again putting the attention away from himself and party and putting on the big bad corporations. HIS party that continues to expand government with debts into the trillions and to support it they MUST raise taxes. Reagan was RIGHT limit government control and expansion and put money back into peoples hands and allow the MARKET to grow… What will happen is that this uncontrolled expansion and debt will FORCE the next president and congress to raise taxes to solve a problem CREATED by Democrats

  13. cvxxx says

Small government is just a slogan with no real definition. Most American companies do not pay the stated tax rate either. Some very profitable companies pay no income tax. The solution is to rewrite the entire tax code.
Yes, it is true that there is a trillion dollars sitting overseas but not being repatriated because of taxing. The solution again is a rewritten tax code.

    1. OSAMA OBAMA says

Let’s start by abolishing the thug I.R.S. Think of the money saved by not paying those statist slobs, and the taxpayer saving by not paying a CPA to interpret the thousands of pages of tax code.

      1. cvxxx says

Just rewrite the tax code simple and quick way. Then there would not be the guess work or big court decisions. Of course that means congress would actually have to do some meaningful work.

        1. OSAMA OBAMA says

They work too hard, those three days. “The House of Representatives has averaged 137 “legislative days” a year
since 2001, according to records kept by the Library of Congress. That’s
about one day of work every three days, or fewer than three days a
          week.”

          1. cvxxx says

And they get all those wonderful benefits too.!!!

  14. teejk says

He’s right. Unfortunately simplification has become exceedingly difficult as the code has become more complex (and after 20 years in the international tax arena I can tell you that it is extremely complex, beyond the comprehension of most people). Besides the usual “punish corporations” group, there are a lot of special interests that make a lot of money with our complexity…tax lawyers, accountants, publishing companies and software companies.

  15. OSAMA OBAMA says

Marxifornia is a good example….”Farmer Brothers, a fixture in California for over 100 years, is just
another of a long list of firms that, fed up with California’s high taxes and anti-business environment, have left for less costly states. Other recent refugees include Chevron, Nestle, Sony, Charles
Schwab, Occidental Petroleum, Toyota, Campbell Soup, Nissan and Comcast, all of which have moved all or a significant portion of their work force out of state.”
Here in California, we already have the highest income tax rate, the highest state sales tax rate and the highest gas tax in America.” or….”Lurking just around the corner are carbon emission fees to be charged to oil companies as part of the state’s cap-and-trade program. The cost to consumers will be huge and painful. These fees are expected to add at least 15 cents to the cost of a gallon of gas in the short term and nearly as much as $2 per gallon over the next five years.”

“The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Foundation has released a new report titled, “Follow the Money,” detailing government waste, fraud and abuse uncovered in 2014.
The report offers examples of irresponsible spending including $194 million in uncollected bills at the state toxics agency, $848 million in overpayments by the CalWORKs program and $80 million in illegal money transfers. The Foundation even found California State University administrators
spent hundreds of thousands in donated money on parties and alcohol. “Even though California taxpayers already pay some of the nation’s highest taxes, Sacramento is considering even more, including new taxes on services and higher gas taxes,” said Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Foundation Chairman Jon Coupal.

BETTER SUPPORT DONALD TRUMP IF YOU WANT LOWER TAXES.

  17. JoAnn Dolberg says

Jim Koch: You need to support Donald Trump if you consider your company’s taxes are too high, which they probably are.

  18. John Q. Public says

Corporate taxes should be 15% but no substitute, exceptions or loopholes !!! The same for all income above 80k !!! Do this and we will be out of debit in 10 years !!! We are 82 trillion in debit due to these loopholes , exceptions and substitutes along with out of control defence spending !!!

  19. JoAnn Dolberg says

Jim Koch, it is my opinion that you need to support Donald Trump if you want lower taxes; the business mogul knows how to get it done.

  20. usathoughts says

You folks commenting have to start stating what business taxes really are. A business is but a tax collection point for the IRS. It is a hidden tax in that the consumer does not see it. The tax is embedded in the price you pay for a product. Worse, you pay a sales tax on that hidden tax.

The REAL problem with a business tax is that it makes American business less competitive.

Government likes this tax system because the consumer does not know about 30% of a products price are taxes. From raw material to finished product you are paying tax on tax on tax… perhaps 20 times. THEN, finished goods business taxes on top of this. Then Sales taxes on top of it all.

It is not my place to say the system is wrong but it is wrong not to inform the public. No matter how one cuts it the consumer pays all taxes. It cannot be otherwise.

  21. Jack says

“TAXES”,We can’t live with them, and for decades, those elected to public office, have shone/proven,we will never know,if we can live without them(taxes),and my own belief, taxes come in all kinds of names. On the front of my telephone statement is a charge titled”Federal Universal Service Fee.”,explanation on the back reads in part”supports telecommunication needs of low income households”,”consumers living in high cost areas (I’m subsidizing the telephone needs of wealthy people?)”schools”plus there are school taxes,”libraries” plus there library taxes and”rural hospitals”. Taxes, can’t live with them, elected people won’t let us live without them(TAXES).

  24. Laurence Almand says

In view of all the corporations that pay NO tax at all – you can find the list on the internet – this corporate character is whining up the wrong tree. Just how much money does HE make in comparison to his employees? And what about all his business lunch and travel deductions?
