Colleges Enlist SJW Students to Snitch on Their “Offensive” Classmates
Williams College in Massachusetts is the latest school to embrace the cultural Marxism that is quickly and efficiently imposing punishment-enforced speech codes on students across the country. These codes, dripping with the unproven, dramatically unscientific theories of the radical left, not only tell students what they can and cannot say but enlist socially-progressive students to snitch on their classmates should they become aware of a transgression. Whose purpose these programs serve is anyone’s guess; the best we can figure it, this comes as a result of academia in general drifting so far left that it is no longer rooted in anything resembling free expression, educational curiosity, or even common sense.
There are liberal professors all over these universities who recognize the danger that this new wave of fascist leftism poses to young minds, academic culture, and, indeed, the United States. But after what happened to Bret Weinstein and other professors who actually had the guts to publicly speak out against this unhinged mob, few of them are willing to sacrifice their careers in an effort to hold back the tide. Thus, the “old style” of liberalism, rooted in the kind of progressivism that holds free speech as one of its defining values, is dying off, replaced by the new, postmodern left in which identity politics and a “win at all costs” attitude takes precedence over any deeper rationale.
In this ideology – insofar as it has any intellectual depth at all – the only thing that really matters is your history of oppression. The women is more oppressed than the man, the lesbian is more oppressed than the straight, the transgender more than the cis, and so on. Everything flows from this premise and the only students or teachers who can freely enjoy the full spectrum of speech are those on the very bottom levels of oppression. Everyone else must, to one extent or another, either clam up or obediently adopt the views of the marginalized.
But what happens when you have students on campus who haven’t been sufficiently indoctrinated into this poisonous worldview? What happens when you have (gasp!) students who refuse to get with the program?
Well, in that regrettable case, you can do one of two things. If you’re an administrator with a clear head and a stiff backbone, you wait until the rowdy mob comes for your job, at which point you are forced to resign in disgrace. If you’re the kind more interested in keeping your salary than in stemming the flood of anti-intellectual, dangerous social justice warriors, you co-opt the movement and align it with the university’s core principles. You create programs like Williams College’s “Speak Out” system, wherein students are encouraged to police each other and report every “bias incident” to the nearest adult.
Williams College defines as problematic a “color-coded sign denoting blue for boys and pink for girls,” and anyone who might tell a male student to wear pants or a female student to wear a skirt, proving that this particular academic bureaucracy has, at the very least, given up all gender theory ground to the far left. Other incidents worthy of reporting:
- Making comments on social media about someone’s disability, ethnicity, race, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, or political affiliations/beliefs
- Writing on a white board about someone’s disability, ethnicity, national origin, race, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, or political affiliations/beliefs
- Drawing or creating pictures that imitate, stereotype, or belittle/ridicule someone because of their gender, gender expression, race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, faith, or political affiliation.
We’re not suggesting that there’s no role for college administrators when it comes to curtailing hateful speech against racial minorities or the disabled, but when you can’t even have a discussion about religious or political beliefs without fear of censure, academia is officially dead. And you don’t have to be greatly versed in the college climate to know exactly which religious and political criticism will be punished and which will not be. Christians and Republicans, after all, can make no claim of oppression – at least not as far as the left’s handbook is concerned.
We used to be of the opinion that this anti-free speech movement was inevitably headed for its own self-destruction. It could only go so far before it collapsed under the weight of its own absurdity. We see now, unfortunately, that we were a bit too optimistic. If anything, this movement is actually gaining in currency and accruing a bizarre sort of legitimacy on the academic left. Never underestimate, we suppose, what beliefs people will adopt when they’re afraid to do otherwise.
