DOJ Accuses Yale University of Discriminating Against Whites and Asian-Americans
After a two-year investigation of Yale University’s admissions process, the Department of Justice notified the prestigious Ivy League institution this week that they are illegally discriminating against both white and Asian-American applicants. The DOJ is accusing Yale of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, a charge Yale administrators have denied.
In a statement to the press, Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband said that the DOJ would not stand for any form of racial discrimination, regardless of the target.
“There is no such thing as a nice form of race discrimination,” said Dreiband. “Unlawfully dividing Americans into racial and ethnic blocs fosters stereotypes, bitterness, and division. It is past time for American institutions to recognize that all people should be treated with decency and respect and without unlawful regard to the color of their skin.
“In 1890, Frederick Douglass explained that the ‘business of government is to hold its broad shield over all and to see that every American citizen is alike and equally protected in his civil and personal rights,’” Dreiband continued. “The Department of Justice agrees and will continue to fight for the civil rights of all people throughout our nation.”
In a statement of his own, Yale President Peter Salovey said that the DOJ’s accusations were without merit.
“The department’s allegation is baseless,” Salovey said. “I am dismayed that the DOJ inexplicably rushed to conclude its investigation without conducting a fully informed analysis, which would have shown that Yale’s practices absolutely comply with decades of Supreme Court precedent.”
Unless we’re misreading Salovey’s statement, he’s basically saying that Yale’s discrimination policies are, like, totally legal.
“By bringing people of different backgrounds, talents, and perspectives together, we best prepare our students for a complex and dynamic world,” he continued. “Yale’s admissions practices help us realize our mission to improve the world today and for future generations. At this unique moment in our history, when so much attention properly is being paid to issues of race, Yale will not waver in its commitment to educating a student body whose diversity is a mark of its excellence.”
Nope, we’re not misreading it, that’s exactly what he’s saying. Yale’s excuse for discriminating against whites and Asian-Americans is that it is more important to outfit the university with a “diverse” student body than it is to grant admissions based on merit. Color us shocked.
If this is a signal that the Trump administration is beginning a full-court press against racial quotas and other academia-destroying nonsense, we’re all for it.
