Is The FBI Fudging Gun Violence Stats?
As defenders of the Second Amendment, we’ve grown accustomed to watching anti-gun groups, liberals, and media personalities distort the facts to suit their agenda. According to the president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, however, we are now witnessing a new kind of distortion. This one, claims John Lott, is coming straight from the FBI.
“The FBI put out a clearly incorrect set of numbers on public shootings shortly before the November elections last year,” said Lott in an interview with Fox News. “I have been reading FBI reports for 30 years and I have never seen anything like this.”
The report in question was released last September. In it, the FBI demonstrated that “mass shooter” incidents had skyrocketed between 2000 and 2013. According to their numbers, there was only one such attack in the year 2000 but a startling 17 such attacks in 2013. Overall, according to their statistics, there were 160 mass shootings in the United States over the period in question.
But Lott insists that these numbers cannot be trusted. According to him, the FBI took their data from news reports, thus automatically weighting figures towards the most recent years. They also included “active shooter” incidents, which made it appear that there were more mass shootings towards the latter end of the range. If they had accounted for these discrepancies, Lott says, they would have found that mass shootings had actually been reduced by half.
Manipulating the Facts
Between shaky raw data and a media all-too-willing to shape statistics to make an anti-gun argument, liberals have successfully stacked the deck against pro-freedom Americans. Yet polls continue to show that Americans believe in the right to bear arms. There are, of course, disagreements when it comes to how liberally those rights should be applied, but that’s to be expected. Few Americans think children should be able to bring AK47s to school; few think we should ban guns altogether.
Unfortunately, our discourse is forced to the extremes by these lies. We are led to believe that our nation is in a permanent state of crisis, the next Sandy Hook always looming around the corner. The only way to prevent it, they say, is to pass stricter laws. When you look at the studies, though, you see that the opposite is true. As more states adopt right-to-carry laws, we see violent crime sink like a stone. There may or may not be a strict correlation there, but one thing is certain: Americans with gun permits are not the problem.
Unless we magically snap our fingers and make every gun in the world disappear into thin air, strict gun laws will always favor the criminal. By making it harder for law-abiding Americans to protect themselves, we make it easier for outlaws to rule the roost. And that’s exactly what liberals want. They want us afraid, powerless, and desperate for intervention. They want us to turn to the government – not the local gun store – for protection.
And they’re apparently willing to sink to any level necessary to achieve that goal.
