MSNBC Host Caught Making Up News to Bash President Trump
Something remarkable happened on MSNBC last week – a primetime host actually apologized for spreading fake news over the airwaves. This was remarkable not because a prominent media figure chose to broadcast thinly-sourced nonsense in an attempt to smear President Donald Trump, of course; that’s essentially the business model for MSNBC, The New York Times, and all the rest of the mainstream political trash that passes for news these days. No, the remarkable part is the retraction. When, we wonder, will MSNBC’s hosts apologize for beaming two years’ worth of Russian conspiracy crap into our homes?
That day is probably not coming, but it was nonetheless satisfying to watch Lawrence O’Donnell sheepishly admit to viewers that he went to air with a story that, had it been subject to even the slightest in-house scrutiny, would have wound up lining the floor of the kill room. After informing viewers on Wednesday that he had special knowledge about Trump’s Duetsche Bank loans – specifically, that Russian oligarchs close to Putin had co-signed on the loans – O’Donnell was threatened with legal action from Trump’s lawyer if he did not apologize and retract.
Knowing that he would not be able to defend his nonsense story in a court of law, O’Donnell found himself with no options left.
“Last night on this show, I discussed information that wasn’t ready for reporting,” he admitted Thursday night. “Saying ‘if true’ as I discussed the information was simply not good enough.”
Um, yeah. You would think that a nationally-broadcasted “journalist” would already be aware of that, but then, you know, O’Donnell came to his show via writing for NBC’s “The West Wing” series, so we guess his pedigree is a little different. The line between fiction and reality has become blurred; as long as it keeps those viewers tuned in after Rachel Maddow has finished spewing her bile all over the airwaves, it’s all good.
Of course, O’Donnell’s show gives way to the night’s final host – none other than disgraced liar Brian Williams, so it’s easy to see why MSNBC hosts would be less than overwhelmed by the mission of telling viewers the truth. It the truth isn’t good enough, just make it up! Anything goes, as long as the target is Donald Trump or his supporters.
Under ordinary circumstances, we would expect to see MSNBC hand O’Donnell his walking papers. It’s simply too dangerous to have someone on your channel with no respect for the boundaries of journalistic ethics. But then, these are not ordinary circumstances, and while we’re sure the MSNBC brass was embarrassed by this whole incident, we doubt they’re all that upset. Lying and stretching the facts has become the order of the day for the mainstream, Trump-hating media. O’Donnell just took it a tiny bit further than what’s currently acceptable.
