Obama’s Idealistic View of American Overtime

Have you ever watched a high schooler campaign for class president? To win, a wise candidate will know his audience. He will know that inexperienced high schoolers can be easily duped into believing even the most ridiculous promises. As long as those promises match student interest, the candidate has a decent shot of winning the election.

You’d think that once people graduate from high school and get a few years of the real world under their belt, they would stop falling for empty promises. You’d think they would be skeptical of broad changes to the free market that seem to have no downside. But as President Obama has proven time and time again, liberals are only skeptics when it comes to the Bible. When it comes to fulfilling their utopian vision of America, no dream is too outlandish. As long as the only ones to suffer are Christians or white people or the rich, they’re all for it!

This week, perhaps on a high from several liberal Supreme Court victories, Obama proposed a new overtime policy that could have extraordinary ramifications for the economy. Under his proposal, the income threshold for mandatory overtime would rise from $24,000 to $50,000, making millions of workers eligible for overtime. On the surface, of course, it sounds great. Anyone who falls in the income range between these two numbers should be jumping for joy. If Obama’s policy goes through, they’ll immediately begin making more money. What a coup!

Except, it doesn’t work like that.

“President Obama’s overtime-pay mandate is filled with job-killing incentives that will drastically increase the cost of hiring new workers,” said former Texas Governor Rick Perry. “Government shouldn’t be in the business of mandating how much employers pay, or the level of benefits they provide.”

Oh, but Democrats believe that’s exactly the business government should be in. And they seem unwilling to acknowledge that every time they stick their regulatory nose into the free market, it has unintended consequences. So it will be for this overtime policy.

As shocking as it may be, though, most employers are not going to just bend over and accept an enormous expansion of their payroll. They aren’t going to shrug their shoulders and submit to a rule that will cost them millions of dollars annually. They are in the business of making a profit, and they aren’t going to let some idiot in the White House prevent them from realizing that goal. Instead, they will almost certainly begin slashing hours, ensuring that anyone who would not be eligible for overtime simply doesn’t get that overtime anymore.

If Obama’s goal is to make sure American workers have more free time on their hands, his policy will be a great success. If it is to make Americans richer, though, it will fail. The free market rules all, even when the feds get crazy with their regulatory tape. If there is a loophole – no matter how small – any responsible company is going to find it and exploit it. Ironically, Obama’s overtime rule is more likely to cost workers money than it is to put more of it in their bank accounts.

Skeptical self-analysis is BEYOND the powers of the gullible because they already feel insecure, must (as they say) “believe in something” if only in believing. Intimations of any lack in their judgment are resisted. Hence it follows that they believe whatever ethnic, religious or national group to which they belong is inherently superlative. Having little sense of individual identity, they derive their identity from some extensive tribe – hence White Supremacy, Black Power, God-Jesus, Dallas Cowboys, etc.

    This makes perfect sense, as does the intentional shrinking of the labor force and relentless expansion of food stamp and disability benefits. Every American who gets a job and begins paying taxes is a potential regime opponent and every dependent nonworker is a likely regime supporter. Once the Maya and Aztec invasion completes our transformation into one-party Mexamericubazuela and the repressive apparatus of drones and SWAT teams and Jade Helm trains is in place, deceptive government lolly like this will not need to be promised, at least not in English.

      What a sneaky way to increase America’s taxes! Overtime pay is taxed higher than regular pay, or at least will usually raise you into a higher income bracket, therefore, more taxes paid by the American public to support the corrupt government! Slick Willie has made it look like he is doing something for the people, but is really doing something for his regime! As you notice, the government is slowly taking over what is/was our standard freedom in this country and doing it quite successfully!

          That was a real concern up to the ’60s…if income over $50,000/yr is taxed at 90%, why bother working more, harder or advancing? Same for a “livable” minimum, if you can live off of what a part time high school kid makes,,,you are the problem,,not the job pay scale.

      Just get ready for the next round of layoffs. Remember when obamacare went into effect? That very day there were massive layoffs all over the country. The jobs that were left went to part-time (30 or less hours per week). Now we’re going to further eliminate jobs by changing the overtime laws. Let’s not forget that he’s also in favor of raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour, which is going to eliminate jobs and cause prices to skyrocket. If the $15 per hour minimum wage comes into being, the minimum wage earners STILL won’t be able to live on it. A loaf of bread will cost around $10, a gallon of milk will be about $15, and so on.

    The original “Freedom of Religion” amendment was predicated on Christian-Judea values, and not on Hinduism, Islam, Buddha, or any of the thousands of religions that exist throughout the world. The intent of the law was to eliminate rivalry among the many Christian/Judea sects seeking freedom from European suppression. That suppression has now reappeared via the Supreme Court and the tyrannical leadership of the present administration.
    The Obama administration knows that they must totally eliminate Christianity in order to pave the way for the anti-Christ and his planned one-world-government. He says he’s a Christian, but supports laws that are contrary to God’s laws, attacks nuns, and has removed Christianity from every aspect of public display, while attending prayer with the Muslims. His goals haven’t changed; to disarm Americans so has to eliminate armed resistance when he initiates executive orders forcing American’s into a “One-World-Government. This man has been positioned by a group of billionaires, to convert America into a third-world-country, but the dead-beats in congress are more worried about the race card, then they are about the country. Our leaders are either brainless dim-wits who have trouble pronouncing the word “TREASON and IMPEACHMENT,” or their part of the plot.           They are not teaching the true history of the United States in our schools now . We need to restore that in our schools. We need to get rid of the consolidated big schools and bring back the small community schools in each small community regardless of size.

            That is precisely why I keep advocating Charter Schools because they are smaller and are under no obligation to most of Big Gov’t edicts. There is a school in my neighborhood that used to be a gov’t public school. So many families took their children out of it that it is now a Charter School. Hurrah and Halleluia!!!!!!

    It’s good to see that “FixThisNation” is now campaigning against overtime pay. Now that is what I call standing up for the little guy! Assuming that the “little guy” is the CEO of some company who has seen his pay increase at eight times the rate of his workers. Assuming that the “little guy” is some CEO who believes that the ceiling for eligibility for overtime should remain where it was thirty-five years ago. Because, yes, let’s not do anything to reign in the pay of the fat cats; let’s stick it to the working men and women!

These folks will just find another way to maximize profits. It is the same as a $15.00 minimum wage. It is not going to work.         Yes, your simplistic answer might appeal to people who have a limited understanding of the real world. But for the rest of us, who understand that the government already influences everything about the “free” market simply by collecting taxes and/or tariffs and then spending that money on roads, bridges, bombers, etc., know that the “free market system” does not thrive and produce at its best when left alone. One can guess that you know nothing of the “gilded age,” pretty much the heyday of laissez-faire policies. You probably know nothing of Theodore Roosevelt, who correctly recognized that the “free market,” when left to its own devices, produced monopolies like Standard Oil which completely destroyed any notion of competition or that “free market” of which you speak.
        Do you remember the Fifties and Sixties? Hmmm? The economy was humming along pretty well back then, when — relative to now — the minimum wage was much higher, taxes were much higher, and unions were far stronger. And, by the way, CEO pay — relative to the pay of the average worker — was much, much lower.
        Go back to school, dude. Learn something other than simplistic catchphrases.

            Dude, the real world is not Greece. At least, not Greece under the Euro. Prior to the EU, the currency of each individual country could rise and fall as needed; that’s the real “free market” in action. The Drachma, for example, might have decreased in value under current conditions to the point where Greek products became less expensive for other countries to import. Greek sales would have gone up and their economic conditions would have resolved.
            Socialism has nothing to do with it. Go look at Iceland if you want to see how the Greek situation might have been handled had they not been an EU member.
            Back in the 50s and 60s, the government was pretty much the same size as it is now, relative to the population. Go read a history book, OK?
            I take it you’re opposed to Social Security and Medicare, as well? And the Interstate system? And the TVA? And the FAA?

            Can we get serious for a minute? I know you guys are supposed to be hyper-partisan over here, but just indulge me for one minute.
            First, there really aren’t any true “socialist” countries. There are countries that practice “democratic socialism,” which is a different beast. And quite a few of those countries are not only very successful – Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands are three countries that are doing well on all benchmarks, and are three of the countries with the highest “happiness” indexes.

            Yeah, Soviet-style “socialism” doesn’t work. Never has, and will never be adopted in a free-market country. Thought experiment: Go into a poor country, where the wealthiest .01% control everything, and ask “Hey! What do you say we set up a system where everything is shared equally?” The citizens of that country will go for it in a heartbeat, because the majority of the population will gain; only that top .01% will lose.

            Now, try that same question in a capitalist country, like the good ol’ U.S. of A. You’ll be chased out of town by an angry mob. In case the answer isn’t obvious, plenty of us have at least a small piece of the pie, and we have the hope that we might get even more.

            My point is that lots of people sling around the term “socialism” as if it’s the bogeyman, when it’s just one more political/economic theory. I can’t think of a single political/economic theory that, if put into practice on a “pure” basis, would work. Unbridled capitalism doesn’t work; we saw that back in the late 1800’s. Pure socialism doesn’t work, either, as we know. But some combination of the two? Like I said, the “happiest countries in the world” list, as published by Forbes, shows “democratic socialist” countries dominating the top 10. Here’s the list, in descending order: Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Finland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland.

            We can have these arguments about political philosophy all day long; that’s fine. It’s even a good idea, if we keep it civil. But I’m a pragmatist. I want to know what works, where does it work, and why does it work. I’m not married to any philosophy, and I don’t have knee-jerk reactions to ideas from the right or the left. Which brings us back to this overtime thing, and here we have real-world evidence, empirical evidence. Raising the minimum wage is just plain good for the economy. We already know that. And we’re not even raising it to keep up with inflation; we’re just trying to get it to where it was back in the Reagan years. When I was a kid, you could get by on minimum wage. Now? It’s not possible, and places like Wal-Mart and McDonald’s would go out of business if it weren’t for government subsidies for their employees.
            It might seem wrong; I understand the argument from your perspective. But the evidence is just the opposite. And that’s the end of my post on this subject; I know this crowd all too well. Have a great day, MAHB001.

            I do not have time to compose a proper response, but being a pragmatic myself, I would like to ask the following questions.

            What is “Democratic Socialism?”
            What is a “happiness” index and how does being at the top of that list justify socialism? Why do you use this index as a goal to impose more socialism on the United States?

            There is a reason why Soviet style socialism does not exist.

            What makes you think that any type of socialism, including your “Democratic Socialism” doesn’t lead to communism?

            What real world empirical evidence do you have that raising the minimum wage is just plain good for the economy?

Do you mind that government “sticks its nose” into the business of the airline companies to insist that their planes not fall apart?             We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
            That very long sentence states precisely what the business of the Government is. That’s what you signed on to when you decided to remain (assuming you were born here) an American citizen. We may disagree on the extent to which our government is supposed to “promote the general Welfare,” but it’s right there on that old sheet of parchment paper.

            You apparently miss the point! And NO I didn’t think the president had the right to STICK his nose in to the business of the people of Iraq or any other country! Our system isn’t perfect, why try to fix some other country. As for as government sticking their nose into theses other things that you mention, they are all things that could cause harm if not regulated and should be regulated by some entity, if not government. That does not give the right to allow the government to control how much money a person can make or how he should get paid. This does not require regulation from anyone but the employer who the person is working for! If I work 50 hours a week one week and am on a salary that compensates for when I work those hours, and the next week I take an extra day of during the week and went home 2 hours early on another day that same week and only worked 38 hours at the same salary,( I work salary, that means NOT hourly) who did I hurt that would require the government or any entity to have to regulate this? Government is SUPPOSED to work FOR THE PEOPLE, NOT CONTROL THEM!

    The real deal will be financial education in all schools. Without the basics of finance most cannot understand what some politician is really saying. Austerity does not work universally. Making states labs for economic experiments is not doing well at all. And is not preparing the nation for a future where many categories of employment are disappearing. The future requires knowledge in areas of study that were ignored. Right now STEM is the big thing. But will it last? Money probably will be around but not in the forms we know. To the current student in High School or College where are the required courses in finance?

    Wrong, putting more money into the working class people will help the economy. They will go out spend their money and purchase goods which will raise the demand for products. Raising the demand for products is what creates jobs. It is the only thing that creates jobs. Just watch that show on T.V. called sharks and you will learn that the thing those sharks look for is how much demand there is for that product. It does not work for the very reasons the author states. Business in the free market system exist to make money, make a profit. Their very structure is designed to maximize their profits. When someone tries to change their business plan or strategy they find ways to get around it or back to where they need to be to make a profit. You can not legislate free market enterprises. It’s not that hard to understand. When several states decided to impose higher taxes and more restrictive regulations on business’s. Those business’s moved to other more business friendly states. Those restrictive states then became more welfare states. They went into debt because their tax base collapsed and they had more people collecting from the state than they did working and paying taxes. It really is economics 101.

They can certainly start repaying the people that did this for them. Read up on what per cent CEO’s pay has gone up compared to the average worker. This will tell you who should have a raise and it will stimulate the economy.

Problem is, the government doesn’t generate wealth. They take the wealth away from private industry to pay the government employees. When that isn’t enough, they print money and create debt. Now you know why we owe more that $18 trillion. Most liberals have absolutely no idea how the economy works or what it takes to run a profitable business. Obama’s only business experience was trying to make non-workers believe that they were entitled what others worked for.

    Does sound good on the surface BUT….. I have been a “salaried” employee for decades and almost every company I have worked for ignore the CURRENT labor laws for salary exempt employees. The laws only help you if you are willing to accept that you no longer want to work at that company. Even though that cant retaliate they will find something to get rid of you. You also have to be willing to burn that bridge for a positive review to future employers and they can research legal records if you sue. MANY employers will not take you on if they know you sued your previous employer. With good paying jobs becoming fewer and far between most will not risk it. I have a feeling the unintended consequences will be worse than any gains.

    Wages are nothing more than a reflection of corporate or company profits sufficient to afford them. Overtime is given on the basis of a corporation or company having work to be done which can not be completed during the normal work day. No well-managed company will be affected by the president’s suggestion should it become law. Necessity is still the mother of convention.
