Gee, where are all the headlines like ours in the mainstream media? The left-wingers at The New York Times, CNN, and the Washington Post absolutely adore using that “without evidence” construction when President Trump says something they don’t like. They LIVE for using that tame, polite-society version of “hey, this guy over here lyin’ his butt off!” They use it all the damn time for Trump, Devin Nunes, Rudy Giuliani, and any other Republican they despise.
So it’s really strange that they didn’t pinch Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) for “lyin’ her butt off” on CNN Friday. Because if ever there was a time to drag out the good ol’ “without evidence” headline construction, Torres’s suggestion that President Trump is being blackmailed by Russian President Vladimir Putin was it.
“I am afraid that Vladimir Putin may have something on the president,” Torres said, spouting conspiracy theories that are as old as they are disproven. “And it is the reason why the president has continued to play the handmaid to Vladimir Putin, inviting him to the White House and opening the doors and not having any advisers present, taking the notes from the interpreter and continuing to talk to him and continuing to parrot everything that he tells him.”
Really? Did Torres just arrive in December 2019 in a time machine from 2017? Has she kept up with the news at all? Did she read the Mueller Report? Does she know that all of that juicy talk about a pee tape was just stuff the Russians made up to have their fun with Christopher Steele and the Hillary Clinton campaign? From the way she’s talking, you have to think that Norma Torres is still holding onto hope that Rachel Maddow, Louise Mensch, and the rest of the OMG RUSSIA goon squad are going to drop a bombshell…any…day…now.
“Russia is no friend of the U.S. They have never been a friend to us. They continue to compromise us internationally. They continue to attack our friends and our allies overseas. So, we have to be very careful, we have to keep a close eye on how this continues to evolve,” Torres continued.
Torres’s nonsense was so far off the map that even CNN host Brianna Keilar had to step in.
“You said you think that Putin may have something, meaning compromising information, kompromat, as it’s said in Russia, on President Trump? Do you have proof of that? Is there something specific that you’re thinking of when you say that?” she asked.
Of course not.
“The fact that this President of the United States continues to depend on Russia to win the next election that he has coming, asking not only Russia, but asking Ukraine and China openly on TV to investigate his political opponents who could be challenging him, and who absolutely have an opportunity to win in this next election, I think is unconscionable,” Torres said, providing exactly zero documentary evidence for her conspiracy theory.
What’s “unconscionable” are elected officials blindly spewing patently-ridiculous accusations against the President of the United States on national television. But, to be fair, our shock at the media’s lack of headlines is as fake as Torres’s allegations. They are, after all, the ones responsible for Torres’s miseducation in the first place.
