(FixThisNation.com) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is facing tough political terrain as he is set to sign a controversial new abortion ban which would block abortions after the sixth week. Many Democrats and some Republicans have argued that this decision could potentially affect DeSantis’ chances in a 2024 presidential race.

DeSantis has not yet announced his intentions for 2024, but it is widely speculated that he is going to join the presidential race.

DeSantis signed off on the measure on Thursday following its approval from the state’s House, which is currently controlled by the GOP. DeSantis’ decision to support the measure could potentially lead to changes in the 2024 presidential election, as both anti-abortion activists and hardline conservatives are likely going to be a big part of the 2024 presidential race.

However, the move could also have some negative consequences for DeSantis who had previously rejected any attempts at even stricter abortion laws months after the Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade, a 1973 landmark case that previously protected adoption rights across the nation.

Jackson Peel, a spokesperson for Florida state House Democrats stated that he did not understand what “DeSantis’ political calculus is here.” He added that once the “ball started rolling” he would either lose the primary or potentially even lose the general election.

DeSantis has touted this legislation claiming that it is a win for the anti-abortion rights movement. Doug Heye, a Republican strategist has further added that DeSantis has “been backed into a very difficult corner.”
