[DEVELOPING] Biden Goes Off on Gun Owners
Speaking about his crime prevention strategy on Wednesday, President Joe Biden took aim at conservatives who believe guns may be necessary to overthrow a future dictator:
“Those who say the blood of Patriots, you know, and all that stuff about how we’re gonna have to move against the government…If you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons,” said Biden.
Biden’s crime prevention strategy depends heavily on gun control – including a ban on assault weapons – and community policing.
The $1.9 trillion stimulus package Biden signed in May includes $350 billion for local and state police budgets, though Biden hopes that money will be used for alternatives such as community policing programs.
Biden also supports proposals to expand and strengthen background checks, though Democrats’ most recent attempt to do so was blocked by Senate Republicans (who view the measure as expensive and ineffective).
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Biden touted his administration’s “zero tolerance” for gun dealers who willfully break the law and threatened to track them down.
“If you willfully sell a gun to someone who’s prohibited from possessing it, if you willfully fail to run a background check, if you willfully falsify a record…my message to you is this: We’ll find you and we will seek your license to sell guns,” warned Biden, who claimed that 90% of illegal guns found at crime scenes could be traced to just 5% of gun dealers.
Biden also seeks to crack down on “ghost guns” (homemade weapons without serial numbers) by updating the legal definition of “firearm” and has created five new “strike forces” within the Department of Justice to track down gun trafficking cartels.
Biden’s remarks on gun control follow a surge in violence that some have blamed on the easing of COVID restrictions. Others see the violence as a direct result of progressive causes including the “defund the police” movement.
“Crime rates are high because of the efforts to defund the police and a failure to prosecute career criminals,” argues National Rifle Association spokeswoman Amy Hunter.
“The simple fact is strict enforcement of existing laws – including gun laws – coupled with support of law enforcement and prosecutors to do their jobs would result in a dramatic decrease in crime. But, the president would rather play politics than make Americans safer.”
The same appears to be true at the US-Mexico border, where Biden’s failed immigration policies have resulted in a flood of refugees and illicit drugs.
