If you needed any further evidence that President Obama thinks the war on terror is over, the FBI has just provided it. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Federal Bureau of Investigation will now be recommending ISIS supporters for therapy.
Proponents of the intervention model say it provides a possible “off ramp” from radicalization and addresses a hard truth: The FBI cannot effectively investigate all of the thousands of Americans who are believed to be interested in Islamic State, also known as ISIS.
Federal officials say that up to 10 percent of terror suspects will now go into counseling rather than behind bars. The focus is expected to be on teenage suspects who mental health officials believe can be guided back to sanity by good therapy.
What’s interesting about this – other than the obvious – is that the FBI claims there are “thousands” of ISIS supporters under investigation right now in the U.S. This is a figure that has not been publicized by the Obama administration, despite many warnings about Americans getting radicalized online. Perhaps if the FBI doesn’t have the resources to properly keep tabs on these extremists, the focus should be on getting them more resources.
These claims of “no resources” should be examined anyway. We hear that a lot from this administration. We don’t have the resources to properly vet Syrian refugees. We don’t have the resources to enforce immigration law. Is Obama gearing up to propose a major tax hike, or is this just a convenient excuse for his liberal policies? When it comes to this president, you can never know. Both, probably.

Providing therapy for misguided ISIS supporters is not only ridiculous from a national security standpoint, it’s idiotic from a psychological point of view. We’re going to take these kids and “de-program” them? What’s that going to look like to others sympathetic to the ISIS cause? Obama couldn’t have come up with a worse strategy if he had the next year to work on it exclusively.
Therapy is meant for the confused, though, and you can’t blame young radicals for getting confused about the messages they’re receiving. Strip away the violence and the Islam, and the ISIS message doesn’t sound that much different from the Democratic platform. America is bad, the world is pitted against people of color, and Christians represent the greatest evil in today’s society. No wonder these kids have a hard time discerning the truth.
