Former Obama Staffer: Democrats Too Hostile to Religion
Michael Wear, who directed President Obama’s efforts to reach out to the religious community in 2012, says that today’s Democratic Party is pushing conservative Christians away with a hostile attitude toward the beliefs they hold dear. Asked by The Atlantic magazine to explain why 81% of white evangelical Christians voted for Donald Trump, Wear said it was symptomatic of a much deeper problem taking root in the American left.
“It shows not just ineptitude, but the ignorance of Democrats in not even pretending to give these voters a reason to vote for them,” Wear said. “We also need to have a robust conversation about the support or allowance for racism, misogyny, and Islamophobia in the evangelical tradition.
“Many of those 81 percent are accommodating cultural changes in America that are deeply problematic,” Wear continued. “Liberals have been trying to convince Americans, and evangelicals in particular, that America is not a Christian nation. The 2016 election was evangelicals saying, ‘Yeah, you’re right! We can’t expect to have someone who is Christian like us. We can’t expect to have someone with a perfect family life. What we can expect is someone who can look out for us, just like every other group in this country is looking for a candidate who will look out for them.’”
Ah, that feeling when you realize that not everyone in the Democratic Party is a raving lunatic.
Democrats like Wear are uncommon, but they’re still around. They despise the cultural leftism that the party has embraced and they’re finding it harder every day to marry their religious beliefs to their political identity.
Say what you will about pro-labor, pro-government economic beliefs…but what do they have to do with radical feminism? What do they have to do with glorifying abortion and abortionists? What do they have to do with homosexual marriage or transgender bathrooms?
“Reaching out to evangelicals doesn’t mean you have to become pro-life,” Wear said. “It just means you have to not be so in love with how pro-choice you are, and so opposed to how pro-life we are.”
Wear says there’s a very good reason, though, why Democrats have completely abandoned religious conservatives.
“The spending that women’s groups have done is profound,” he said. “2012 was a year of historic investment from Planned Parenthood, and the campaign in 2016 topped it.”
That’s not all there is to it, but that’s a big part of it. Follow the money. You can do it not just with abortion and gay marriage, but also with the Democratic Party’s environmental agenda, their irresponsible approach to immigration, and many other issues. They are being paid handsomely for the destruction of the country.
Ultimately, though, policies that destroy the family structure make Americans more dependent on a strong, centralized government. And since that’s the only thing Democrats really care about, they’re probably not headed for a religious awakening anytime soon.
