This morning, we were looking at a story from Britain where woke BBC viewers were complaining about the movie “Grease” being “too white and too rapey” to be shown on television. As we were thinking about how Britain might be even worse than the U.S. when it comes to matters of political correctness, along comes this story from Sunday’s opening day of Congress. And it just reconfirmed to us that, no, however bad things are getting across the pond, the American left is still #1 when it comes to absurd wokeness.
“Democrat representative Emanuel Cleaver caused a stir online after he ended his congressional prayer with the words ‘amen and awoman,’” reports The Independent. “Mr. Cleaver was invited to deliver the prayer opening up the 117th Congress on Sunday, when he decided to introduce a gesture towards gender neutrality.”
This goes hand in hand with the new House rules that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi approved on Sunday, which are mostly concerned with taking gendered language out of the handbook. No longer will the women of Congress have to be subjected to the painful patriarchal messages inherent in words like “chairman” thanks to the brave progressivism of Mrs. Pelosi. And, thanks to Rep. Cleaver, they won’t have to feel monopolized by the anti-woman sentiment encoded in the word “amen.”
But that wasn’t the only aspect of Cleaver’s prayer that drew raised eyebrows from conservatives. The Missouri Democrat also, strangely enough, invoked the name of the ultimate Hindu god when closing out his heavenly call.
“We ask it in the name of the monotheistic God, Brahma, and ‘god’ known by many names by many different faiths,” said Cleaver. “Amen and a-woman.”
“A Methodist preacher praying in the name of the “monotheistic God….and brahma?? Forget the a-woman, words can’t even begin to explain,” one observer on Twitter noted.
Rep. Guy Reschenthaler said it was embarrassing to watch a Democrat imply that there was something – anything – patriarchal about the word “amen,” which simply translates to “so be it.”
“Unfortunately, facts are irrelevant to progressives,” he said. “Unbelievable.”
Yeah. This is what some on the right mean when they invoke the term, “clown world” to describe the woke left and its machinations. There is nothing serious here. There is nothing to be analyzed or rationally deliberated. It’s just nonsense from top to bottom. It’s just pandering, outrage, and silliness.
But the fact that one of the country’s two major political parties is basing their entire platform on this spongy ground…that IS serious. That is, actually, downright terrifying.
