…went on the attack Wednesday, slamming Donald Trump and his controversial Trump University.
“He is trying to scam America the way he scammed all those people at Trump U,” Hillary said at a campaign event in Newark, NJ.
Using a slew of internal documents released by the judge in a lawsuit against Trump, Hillary said the billionaire was willing to do anything to enrichen himself, even if it meant hurting others.
“Trump and his employees took advantage of vulnerable Americans, encouraging them to max out their credit cards, empty their retirement savings, destroy their financial futures, all while making promises they knew were false from the beginning,” she said. “This is just more evidence that Donald Trump himself is a fraud.”
The campaign clearly thinks there is political fruit to be picked here; they took the argument to social media as well.
“Rubio’s strongest moment was when he called Trump a con man based in part on Trump U,” tweeted Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon. “Rubio wasn’t around long enough to make the case. We will.”
Hmm, you sure about that?
Not to give Hillary Clinton advice on how to run her campaign, but she might want to tread lightly here. By attacking Trump in this way, she is abandoning her strengths (or her perceived strengths, in any case) and venturing well outside her political comfort zone. This is a dual attack on Trump’s business acumen and his honesty, two areas where she is deeply vulnerable to a counter-attack. She has no private sector accomplishments worth mentioning and when it comes to honesty…
Well, a new poll from Rasmussen shows that 30% of likely voters think Trump is more honest than the typical politician. Meanwhile, only 15% think the same about her.
Maybe these attacks are meant to turn those numbers around. But if Hillary really wants to convince the public of her honesty, why not face the cameras, face the questions, and finally tell the (whole) truth about her State Department email debacle?
