This week, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey crossed the invisible red line of political correctness when he had the audacity to not only purchase food from Chick-fil-A, but actually post a picture of his chicken dinner on social media.
The outrage was as immediate as it was ridiculous.
Because the restaurant’s CEO, Dan Cathy, has been an outspoken supporter of traditional marriage, Chick-fil-A is viewed as an enemy of the LGBT movement. By supporting the restaurant in such a public fashion, therefore, Dorsey had betrayed the left and invited a hailstorm of criticism down on his head. Only a few hours after the original picture was posted, Dorsey meekly apologized to his critics, insisting that he “forgot” about the restaurant’s “background.”
The entire incident obviously left many Americans scratching their heads. Was Chick-fil-A really such a great American evil that one must be subject to public scorn and humiliation for deigning to dine there? Is Dan Cathy actively persecuting gays around the country? Is it not a valid opinion that the form of marriage humanity recognized as valid for thousands of years is, perhaps, still the only legitimate type?
Well, Noah Michelson of the Huffington Post was happy to clear up the confusion. “If you really love LGBTQ people,” he writes this week, “you just can’t keep eating Chick-fil-A.”
Choices…choices.
“For some strange reason I still don’t fully understand,” he writes, “some queer people and their friends and families began eating at Chick-fil-A again and are still eating there.
“I’d venture a guess that Cathy’s somewhat conciliatory yet ridiculously inadequate non-apology and the company’s (totally bogus) promise to stop donating to anti-LGBTQ groups (while it may have ceased funding some groups, it’s certainly still bankrolling others) may have made some people feel justified in returning to the chain,” he continues. “People can be disturbingly indignant and defiant when faced with giving up their beloved chicken sandwiches.
“If you care about queer people ― or you yourself are queer ― you have absolutely no business eating at Chick-fil-A. Ever. It’s really that straightforward,” he mandates.
We don’t even know where to begin with this kind of idiocy, but it seems to us like the perfect encapsulation of everything that’s wrong with the LGBT movement (and, for that matter, the rest of the grievance-filled left). This is a movement whose supporters tolerate NO disagreement, NO differing points of view, and NO deviation from the all-outrage-all-the-time agenda. Instead of taking their substantial social and legal victories and running with them, they are determined to see to it that there is no place in America where one can hold traditional views and not be punished for them, be it economically or legally. This is the kind of attitude that inevitably leads to a backlash.
We already saw one such backlash in the form of the 2016 election results. People like Michelson are apparently desperate to trigger another.
