Impeachment: A Crime the Victim Says Never Happened

Not for the first time, a top Ukrainian official denied Thursday that they were aware of any connection between American military aid and an obligation to produce an investigation into Joe Biden, Burisma, or the 2016 election. In remarks reported by Interfax-Ukraine, the country’s foreign minister, Vadym Prystaiko, blew a gaping hole in the Democrats’ entire theory of impeachment. Essentially, the House is trying to prove a crime was committed even as the supposed victim of said crime says…yeah, it never happened.

“I have never seen a direct link between investigations and security assistance. Yes, investigations were mentioned, you know, in a presidential conversation. But there was no clear connection between these events,” Prystaiko said.

He continued: “Ambassador Sondland did not tell us, and did not tell me exactly, about the relation between the assistance and the investigations. You should ask him. I do not recall any conversation with me as with foreign minister. It was not we, the Ukrainian officials [who were told this].”

So, have we reached peak absurdity yet?

Against Trump, we have a “whistleblower” who is too cowardly to come out of the shadows and stand behind his written complaint. We have a handful of foreign service officials who heard something from someone in the hall at some point. We have an ambassador who got his theory of Trump’s state of mind from The New York Times.

For Trump, we have an actual transcript of the call in question, which shows no wrongdoing. We have the fact that the military aid was released with no announced investigation on the part of the Ukrainians. And we have the Ukrainians themselves saying, we don’t know what the hell you guys are talking about.

Really?

What’s left? Certainly not the outrageous charge of “bribery,” which is the new buzzword being thrown about by Nancy Pelosi. Indeed, the only thing we can see here is the slap-on-the-wrist offense of Trump gently mixing politics and official state business. And if we impeach Trump for that, we ought to go back in history and retroactively impeach every other president who ever sat in the Oval Office, because you can bet your bottom dollar that they all did it at one point or another.

What Democrats really don’t want to talk about is the truth, which is that there are very good reasons to investigate Hunter Biden, his position at Burisma, and his dad’s policy towards Ukraine during the Obama years. Indeed, the only thing they want to talk about less than that is CrowdStrike, which remains the only company in the world to have actually examined the DNC’s 2016 servers.

Trump’s crime was not “bribery,” it was getting too close to information that could blow up the entire Democratic Party.
