Joe Biden: “We’ve Never Lived Up” to America’s Founding Ideals
In an interview on Wednesday, Joe Biden said that he wants to be the president of a nation that has “never” been great. That’s essentially what he said, anyway. Imagine this kind of patriotism in a presidential candidate even twenty years ago. The guy would be run out of town on an Amtrak train before he knew what was happening.
But nowadays, when the Democratic Party line is: America was founded in white supremacist terror and has carried that tradition forward every day since, Biden is on firm footing. Trash the country all you want, it just shows how deeply you care about whichever minority group currently has the spotlight.
“America was an idea, an idea,” Biden said in the interview. “‘We hold these truths to be self-evident.’ We’ve never lived up to it, but we’ve never walked away from it before. And I just think we have to be more honest. Let our kids know, as we raise them, what actually did happen. Acknowledge our mistakes so we don’t repeat them.”
Just in case you think this might have been one of Biden’s infamous “gaffes,” he laid that perception to rest when he tweeted: “America was an idea. We’ve never lived up to it but we’ve never walked away from it before.”
Trump campaign communications manager Tim Murtaugh wasted no time slamming the Democratic nominee for the sentiment.
“Joe Biden’s closing argument is that America has always been a disappointment,” Murtaugh tweeted.
Mercedes Schlapp, another Trump campaign advisor, pointed out that Biden has had plenty of time to help America come into alignment with its stated values.
“@JoeBiden Where have you been for 47 years?” she wrote. “America is the greatest nation in the world. We stand for freedom and opportunity for all. Our nation is filled with strong, innovative and hard-working individuals who love this nation & don’t want to fundamentally transform it.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy hit that theme as well: “47 years, 0 accomplishments. Americans deserve better than your apology tour.”
It seems stunning to realize that the man who is (according to polls, anyway) very likely to be our next president can’t even bring himself to admit that the United States is a great country, but he follows in the not-so-proud tradition of Obama in denigrating the very nation that he wants to now lead. Why anyone would want to vote for such a man is nearly beyond us…but then again, there are a lot of voters out there who are looking to blame anyone and anything for their own failures in life. Guess they found their guy in Joe Biden.
