While millions of Americans are crying for Planned Parenthood to be cut off from federal funding in the wake of several disturbing undercover videos, a judge in California is taking action…against the filmmakers. In a move that has struck a sour chord with anyone disgusted by the content of the videos, Los Angeles Superior Court has issued a restraining order against the Center for Medical Progress. No more videos, said the judge, if they show footage of StemExpress employees.
StemExpress – the fetal tissue company whose leaders are shown on at least one of the videos – sought the restraining order after CMP released several controversial videos to the public. While the vast onslaught of criticism has been aimed at Planned Parenthood, StemExpress is clearly concerned about their own reputation as well.
In a statement, CMP leader David Daleiden said StemExpress was employing “meritless litigation” in an attempt to cover up an “illegal baby parts trade.”
Whether or not that can be proven remains to be seen, but the fallout from these videos already has Planned Parenthood executives frantically trying to avoid a worst-case-scenario. President Cecile Richards appeared on television last weekend to denounce the CMP operatives, casting them as anti-abortion fanatics responsible for bloodshed and violence. She assured ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that her organization had done nothing illegal.
But the videos thus released could be just the tip of the iceberg for the nation’s leading abortion provider. Daleiden has promised nine more videos exposing the true nature of the organization, telling Sean Hannity that CMP had nearly 300 hours of raw undercover footage still to be released to the public. He, too, promised that everything his group had done was in compliance with all applicable laws.
How this pans out is anyone’s guess, but pro-lifers know better than to get their hopes too high. The abortion industry has seemingly been on the ropes before only to bounce back with a vengeance. Millions of Americans have grown up in the age of Roe v. Wade, and it will be difficult for many of them to wrap their heads around changing the law. And anyone counting on Republicans in Congress to strip Planned Parenthood of their federal funding has more faith in the GOP than this website.
For the moment, though, it is enough to have our abortion practices under the spotlight. Contrary to what the media would have you believe, half this nation still considers themselves pro-life. That’s a powerful force for good, if only it can be driven in the right direction. And millions more who consider themselves pro-choice should nonetheless be disgusted and outraged by what these videos expose. The days of Planned Parenthood posing as a women’s health organization may be coming to an end.
