New internal FBI documents were unsealed for the public on Wednesday, showing that the agents who interviewed then-national security advisor Michael Flynn in January 2017 strayed far from the path of official protocol in an effort to trap Trump’s right-hand man on intelligence issues.
According to the documents, which were written by former FBI head of counterintelligence Bill Priestap following a meeting with James Comey and Andrew McCabe, suggest that the agents were more interested in boxing Flynn into a lie than they were in investigating an actual crime.
“What is our goal?” one of the notes mused. “Truth/Admission or to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired?”
“If we get him to admit to breaking the Logan Act, give facts to DOJ + have them decide,” another note read.
George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley said the documents should be alarming to any American who cares about the abuse of power inside the Department of Justice.
“We need to hear from the DOJ official on the meaning of this note,” Turley tweeted. “However, the reference to the Logan Act is particularly chilling. It suggests the use of a flagrantly unconstitutional act to trap a top Trump official. This is just one document (though more is expected to be released). However, it adds troubling new details to an already dubious prosecution by the Justice Department. The clear impression is that the DOJ sought to bag a top Trump official in legal version of a canned hunt.”
In the released notes, Priestap is seen chronicling the concerns of the involved agents, who wondered, among other things, if they weren’t jeopardizing the department by going into the Flynn interview with questionable motives.
“If we’re seen as playing games, White House will be furious,” one note read.
At the end of the day, Flynn was never charged with a Logan Act violation; he was merely charged with a single count of lying to authorities. Flynn later claimed that he only plead guilty to that charge under duress and he has since fought to retract the plea.
In an interview with Sean Hannity on Wednesday, Flynn’s lawyer, Sidney Powell, said the notes were documentation of wrongdoing.
“It’s just absolutely appalling what these agents, and then special counsel operatives, did to General Flynn,” Powell said. “It’s abuse of their authority at every turn. I interpret the notes as absolutely damning of their conduct and their plan. They rejected the advice of the apparent lawyer who wrote on the handwritten note that they not play games with the White House and instead that is exactly what they did.”
It seems clear at this point that the agents had one thing in mind: Flipping Flynn and turning him into a witness against the president. They didn’t get what they wanted, which is no surprise since we now know there was absolutely nothing to the Russian collusion hoax in the first place. In any case, they sought to make an example out of the Marine general. Now the bill is coming due on their deep state treachery.
