Oh what a difference a year makes.
Last year around this time, the public was getting its first (but far from its last) look at Michael Avenatti, the man who came to be termed “Creepy Porn Lawyer” by Tucker Carlson for his unseemly representation of Stormy Daniels and his infatuation with getting his face on television. Avenatti became a liberal folk hero overnight, giving the #Resistance a tough, no-holds-barred kind of champion who was not afraid to take the fight right to the President of the United States. He rode that newfound fame relentlessly; there was a month or two last spring where not a single night went by that Avenatti did not appear on one cable news channel or another.
The mighty have fallen far. One day after Attorney General William Barr sent a letter to Congress outlining the Mueller Report and exonerating President Trump, Mr. Avenatti was arrested in New York City for trying to run an extortion scheme against Nike. Apparently having moved on from Stormy and the go-nowhere vendetta against the president, Avenatti has filled his time trying to get into the R. Kelly case, beating up his girlfriend, and threatening one of the most powerful corporations in the U.S. You have to hand it to the guy, he aims big.
God, it will be a pleasure watching the feds put this guy away.
And put him away they might. According to Fox News, Avenatti could face a sentence of up to 100 years in prison if convicted on the Nike extortion charges and the separate federal charges of embezzlement stemming from his old law partnership. How he’ll go that long without being interviewed by Chris Hayes or Don Lemon, we don’t know. It’s going to be a trying time, that’s for certain.
As usual, Avenatti searched for the first microphone he could find upon bonding out of jail.
“For the entirety of my career, I have fought against the powerful,” he said. “Powerful people and powerful corporations. I will never stop fighting that good fight. I will be fully exonerated and justice will be done.”
Sure, and your evidence is going to bring down the President of the United States any day now.
Adding to the humorous quality of this story, Avenatti’s co-conspirator in the Nike case is none other than lawyer Mark Geragos, who is no stranger to CNN himself. Bad week for these liberal cable news channels, man. Bad week indeed.
Let’s let Avenatti’s former client have the last word, shall we?
“Knowing what I know now about Michael, I’m saddened but not shocked regarding his arrest,” Stormy Daniels said in a statement.
