Maxine Waters Denies Ever Inciting Violence Against Trump Officials
Because Democrats are determined to see Trump convicted in the Senate on impeachment charges of inciting the riot at the Capitol, it is only natural that their own words are coming back to haunt them. Often cited over the last week or two was Rep. Maxine Waters’ infamous 2018 remarks, where she said she had “zero sympathy” for Trump administration officials who were being harassed in public. In fact, she instructed her followers to make it a regular habit.
“They’re not going to be able to go to a restaurant, they’re not going to be able to stop at a gas station, they’re not going to be able to shop at a department store,” Waters said at the time. “The people are going to turn on them, they’re going to protest, they’re going to absolutely harass them.”
Trump’s impeachment attorneys have promised to use this statement and those from other Democrats at the trial to show that critics of the former president are throwing stones from glass houses. But in an interview with MSNBC this weekend, Waters said that there was nothing in her remarks that could be construed as a call for violence.
“As a matter of fact, if you look at the words that I used, the strongest thing I said was tell them they’re not welcome,” Watters claimed. “I said talk to them. Tell them they’re not welcome. I didn’t say go and fight. I didn’t say anybody was going to have any violence. And so they can’t make that stick.”
Of course, if she’s going to use that excuse, then Trump can use the same one. Unless Democrats are holding on to a secret recording of Trump telling his supporters to go smash up the Capitol and invade the House floor, nothing in his January 6th speech can be interpreted as “incitement.” As far as we know, they do not have possession of such a video, making this trial an utter farce.
“The Republicans should be afraid, not only about the destruction of our democracy but if they continue to support him and allowed themselves to be guided by him, they’re going to have to live with a president that dictates to them every vote they can take, every vote they cannot take,” Waters said on Sunday. “He’s going to be in their primaries. They will be owned by this dishonorable human being.”
As far as we can see, the Democratic Party is far more “owned” by Trump than the GOP ever has been or ever will be. Without the Ultimate Orange Villain, they have nothing to do or talk about except their own political agenda.
And trust us, they do NOT want to be talking too much about that.
