Mayor Tries to Cancel Pledge of Allegiance

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

To anyone who thinks this should be canceled in modern society, the American people would appreciate it if you would just go and find yourself another place to live. If you do not love this land and what it stands for, why are you still here? Not to mention, if you are a leader of this great country who believes this should not be upheld, you should be fired from your job as soon as possible.

This, apparently, has happened. The mayor Shane Fuhrman of a Colorado town called Silverton decided to attempt to cancel the Pledge of Allegiance from its town meetings. His stated excuse for the action was, “Due to direct and indirect threats, inappropriate comments in and out of public meetings, and the general divisiveness this is creating in our community, we will not be doing the Pledge of Allegiance during town of Silverton board of trustee meetings”.

Board trustee member Molly Barela then asked, “Any other unilateral decisions we need to know about?”

Fuhrman responded, “If you’d like to find somewhere in the code that does not permit me to do this, I welcome that discussion at our next meeting”. A blatant attempt to disregard her concerns, to which she continued to respond saying, “It’s just been done for a long time. We all took an oath. And we, as the board, collectively decided it would be done”.

The meeting resumed, but at the end of the public comment section, one woman stood up and declared that she wanted to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. With that, nine people including two board members with Barela herself, all stood up in good American faith to recite the Pledge despite opposition from the mayor. Angry with them standing up for American values, Fuhrman told them that they were behaving out of order and said that they would be forced to leave if there were any more interruptions to the public meeting.

After the meeting, Molly Barela spoke to local news KDVR about the incident, saying that “To tell members of the public they are not allowed to say the Pledge of Allegiance during public comment and threaten to have them removed, that it was one strike and you’re out policy, violates every single one of their first amendment rights”.

In support, Representative Lauren Boebert, a Republican from Colorado tweeted remarks condemning the mayor’s decision with, “Silverton CO’s Mayor unilaterally banned the Pledge of Allegiance at city meetings. It’s hard to put into words what kind of anti-American disgrace this is. Mayor Fuhrman should resign and purchase a one-way ticket to China where he won’t have to worry about hearing the pledge!”.
