Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, well on her way to getting hoisted out of office by the sheer anger of the people, made one of the most foolish statements we’ve ever heard this week on a podcast with former Obama strategist David Axelrod. Whitmer, who is under fire for her radical shutdown policies during the coronavirus pandemic, said that while it was important to put a moratorium on elective surgeries right now, she didn’t see how abortion procedures should fall into that category.
“We stopped elective surgeries here in Michigan, and some people have tried to say that that type of a procedure is considered the same, and that’s ridiculous,” Whitmer said when asked about states like Texas that have tried to stop abortions during the crisis. “A woman’s health care, her whole future, her ability to decide if and when she starts a family is not an election, it is a fundamental to her life.
“It is life-sustaining,” she continued, “and it’s something that government should not be getting in the middle of.”
We’ve heard a lot of crazy rhetoric from pro-abortion enthusiasts, but we’re not sure we’ve ever heard anyone go as far as to call the procedure “life-sustaining.” Maybe we missed it. It does sound like something former Planned Parenthood chief Cecile Richards might have said at one point or another. But yeah…that takes a lot of nerve.
Axelrod went on to ask Whitmer if she thought that the coronavirus crisis had given some states a “backdoor” to ban abortion, a step they would like to take under normal circumstances. Or, he asked, was a temporary ban on abortion a reasonable measure when personal protective equipment and hospital resources are in short supply.
“My gut says it’s the former,” she said, unsurprisingly. “I’m not in Texas, I don’t know all the individuals involved but I do think there is a concerted effort to use every opportunity to take away women’s ability to make our own health care decisions.”
Those comments would be predictable coming from any Democrat, but they’re particularly jarring coming from Whitmer, who has gone to insane extremes in her shutdown orders. She’s banned people from buying seeds, running motorboats, and visiting their relatives, but she thinks that abortion moratoriums are a bridge too far? At least putting a stop to abortion procedures actually has some relationship to the crisis at hand.
There’s been some talk of Whitmer joining Joe Biden’s presidential ticket. Not that we need another reason to vote for Trump in November, but damn, that would definitely give us one.
