Beyond all the specific examples of fake news and FISA abuse and political motivations that let us know a long time ago that the Trump/Russia investigation was nonsense, one overriding thought has always nagged at us in the background. It’s this: To swallow the idea that Donald Trump and his associates conspired with Putin to steal the 2016 election, you have to believe that it is POSSIBLE to do such a thing right under the nose of the greatest intelligence agencies the world has ever known. Not only do it, but get away with it! Get away with it to the point that you get elected President of the United States! To buy this, you either have to believe that Trump is one of the most sophisticated criminals of all time or that the CIA, the NSA, and the FBI are next to worthless when it comes to protecting our national security.
And that’s not even the half of it, because we suppose that we could – under heavy sedation – be led to believe that some mastermind could indeed steal an election right out from under these international spy agencies, with just the right amount of help from a country like Russia. Maybe?
What we could not believe, no matter what kind of pills you gave us, is that you could pull off such a heist without leaving a trail of obvious evidence behind you like a weeping snail. We could not believe that after TWO YEARS of investigating, neither the FBI nor the CIA nor an independent special counsel could find any trace of this crime beyond the thinnest pieces of political propaganda.
But indeed, we are asked to believe all of this as we come upon the one-year anniversary of Robert Mueller’s appointment, because remember: The Russia investigation didn’t begin when Mueller came on board. He inherited an investigation that was already a year in progress. And yet after all this time, there’s nothing to show for it other than a few old indictments against Paul Manafort, a shady Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer, and some “hey, how’s it going” meetings between Jeff Sessions and the Russian ambassador? Are you serious right now?
“Congratulations America, we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History…and there is still No Collusion and No Obstruction,” President Trump tweeted on Thursday. “The only Collusion was that done by Democrats who were unable to win an Election despite the spending of far more money!”
It is not just time to end this investigation, it is BEYOND time. America has never been asked to endure such a travesty for such a long period of time. It’s not clear how much more our country can take before all of our constitutional norms are forever tarnished. Wrap it up, said Mike Pence a couple of weeks ago. We agree.
