No More Redskins: Team Caves to Social Justice Pressure
For years, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder held his ground against increased calls from The Great Woke Masses to change the name of the team. Knowing full well that these calls did not originate in the Native American community (indeed, most actual Indians are in favor of the name and logo of the team), he was determined to ignore the busybodies who wanted to make a controversy where none existed.
Unfortunately, though, that resolve appears to have crumbled. According to an announcement on Monday morning, the team is going to finally let the “Redskins” mark fade into history.
The team is not expected to announce a replacement name for weeks. Some reports suggest that their preferred name is currently the subject of a trademark dispute.
“On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name. That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward,” the team announced. “Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.
“Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years,” the statement continued.
It’s likely that financial pressure had at least as much to do with the decision as negative press. FedEx called for a name change in recent weeks, threatening to remove their sponsorship of the stadium if Snyder didn’t take action by the end of the season. Perhaps even more damningly, retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target announced that they would no longer sell Redskins merchandise on their websites.
Some prominent athletes and pundits, including NBA star Kevin Durant, have suggested that Washington should change their team name to the “Red Wolves.”
Which is fine…right up to the point, some inevitable day in the future, when the left decides that we can no longer name teams after innocent animals who didn’t get a say in the matter. You may think that’s a silly argument, but is it really any sillier than defunding the police? Is it sillier than calling the “little white guy” who tells you to proceed at crosswalks an example of unintentional racism? Is it sillier than taking words like “manhole” out of official government papers? We’ve seen all of this and then some in recent weeks, so maybe don’t get too comfortable about defining the limits of the left’s insanity.
We’ve seen all too clearly that there are none.
