Democrats, who have never heard of a ne’er-do-well, criminal, drug dealer, or terrorist that they would turn away at the border, are naturally taking the side of Hoda Muthana, the woman who left the United States years ago to join the Islamic State.
While both President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have said that Muthana will not ever set foot again on American soil, Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) spoke up this week to say that the ISIS bride should be allowed back in the country. He couched it in a lot of hard-hitting language about “facing justice,” of course, but the fact remains that he is advocating for the exact same thing that Muthana herself wants.
“While I certainly understand the initial reaction to prohibit Hoda Muthana from coming back to the United States, I am concerned that allowing anyone who has committed crimes against the people of this country to remain beyond the reach of our justice system is the wrong approach and sends the wrong message,” Jones said Sunday. “My view is that she should absolutely be brought to justice for inciting violence against Americans. Doing so would send a powerful message that any American who lends support to a terrorist organization will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.”
This argument enjoys some support among lawyers and Democrats and left-leaning think tanks like the Brookings Institute, but it is misguided to say the least. The left always wants to treat Islamic terrorists as if they are just another brand of criminal. Put them on trial, lock them in a U.S. prison, and then, you know, maybe after a few years they can be released on good behavior. No problem.
But these are not normal criminals who can be easily rehabilitated in the prison system. These are, in many cases, brainwashed, hateful, Allah-guided killing machines who only care about wreaking destruction on the West. And, with the possible exception of Israelis, there is no greater target than Americans. Put Muthana in an American prison, and who is to say she doesn’t begin – on day one – to start recruiting other criminals to her cause. On American soil, she becomes a danger to U.S. citizens – yes, even those already locked up for other reasons. There is no justification for the risk.
Muthana now expresses remorse for joining ISIS, but there’s no reason to believe that she was led to this remorse by anything other than a desire to get the hell out of Syria. We cannot forget that this woman betrayed her country, married not one but two ISIS soldiers, and wrote things like this on social media: “Go on drive-bys and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them. Veterans, Patriot, Memorial etc Day parades…go on drive by’s + spill all of their blood or rent a big truck n drive all over them. Kill them.”
The federal government/military has gotten a lot wiser about terrorism under the leadership of President Trump. Letting Muthana back in the country would be a step backwards. It would be a very Obama thing to do. What more needs to be said?
