According to Maria Goldstein of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, her local Office Depot is practicing religious discrimination. Goldstein, a Roman Catholic, says store employees turned her away when she asked them to produce 500 copies of “A Prayer for the Conversion of Planned Parenthood” last month. Goldstein intended to pass the handouts – which included abortion statistics in addition to the titular prayer – out to her fellow church members. But Office Depot informed her that running the copies would violate company policy.
Office Depot spokesman Karen Denning defended her turf, insisting that policy prohibits “the copying of any type of material that advocates any form of racial or religious discrimination or the persecution of certain groups of people. It also prohibits copying any type of copyrighted material.”
Perhaps sensing that this explanation would leave a lot of people scratching their heads, Denning clarified her position. “The flier contained material that advocates the persecution of people who support abortion rights.”
Oh. So now it is persecution when a conservative disagrees with a liberal? Of course! This is where the academic left was heading with all the talk about “safe spaces.” Clearly, it makes pro-choicers feel unsafe when Christians disagree with them on the subject of abortion. Abortion supporters are apparently the nation’s newest protected minority.
“The intention of the prayer is to ask for conversion,” Goldstein said, denying any calls for persecution. “The conversion of the staff, employees, everybody who is part of this at Planned Parenthood. It means they will recognize life has dignity and that it is valuable and not a commodity to be bought and sold.”
Goldstein, who is represented by lawyers with the Thomas More Society, is demanding a full apology from Office Depot headquarters. If the company does not respond to her liking, she has indicated that she will take further legal action.
Just imagine for a moment what the reaction would be if Goldstein was a Muslim. Office Depot would be on the front page of the Washington Post. Rachel Maddow would crucify them in front of an audience of dozens. How dare this company marginalize one of the country’s precious Muslims? But no, since this is just another Christian bigot, we’ll see none of the liberal outrage. They see pro-lifers as worthy of less respect than the lowest animal.
Of course, that’s still more respect than they afford the unborn.
So, let’s just make sure we’ve got this straightened out. Illegal: Refusing to provide gay propaganda, gay wedding cakes, and service to gay weddings. Legal: Refusing to copy pro-life informational leaflets.
Wonder what Office Depot’s reaction would be if someone wanted to print copies of the Constitution…
