OK Governor Will Not Remove Ten Commandments

In what promises to be a showdown for the ages, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin says that she will not comply with a state Supreme Court ruling that orders the Ten Commandments be removed from the Capitol grounds. The ruling, which came down last week after the monument was challenged by the ACLU, says that the display is in clear violation of the Oklahoma Constitution. Fallin disagrees, and she is asking the court to reconsider their 7-2 decision.

“Oklahoma is a state where we respect the rule of law, and we will not ignore the state courts or their decisions,” said Fallin. “However, we are also a state with three co-equal branches of government.”

In addition to pressuring the court to reconsider, Fallin is seeking legislation that would allow Oklahoma citizens to vote on a constitutional amendment. If passed, residents of the state would get to decide whether or not to remove a constitutional ban on using public funds or property to promote religion. She believes that the Ten Commandments should be an exception to the rule as it provides historical context for the foundation of Western law.

Attorney General Scott Pruitt put it even more bluntly. “Quite simply,” he said, “the Oklahoma Supreme Court got it wrong.”

An Ongoing Battle

The fight over the Ten Commandments is only the latest in a series of national clashes between Christians and the left. This is a war that has been waging for decades, and the left has been remarkably successful in their attempt to secularize the country. Prayer in schools, Ten Commandments displays, Christmas decorations…they leave no stone unturned. Ashamed of America’s Christian heritage, these atheists will not be satisfied until God is whitewashed from history.

Yet after all the defeats, there are still millions of conservatives willing to stand up to the militants. At a time when it would be easy to give up and accept the worst, Christians and conservative politicians are steeling themselves for a final stand. And in some cases, that stand may require civil disobedience. It may require outright contempt of court. But for those Americans who mourn the loss of a country grounded in faith, there is no price too big to pay.

Is this a winnable war? Of course. If a ragtag army of colonialists could defeat the most powerful empire on the planet, conservatives can conquer the secular left. The question isn’t whether we can win; the question is whether we will. It will require courage, determination, and perseverance. More than anything, though, it requires an understanding of the enemy. Liberals are tricky, cowardly, and seductive; many Christians don’t even know there is a war going on. It’s up to us to spread the word and make sure everyone knows where our country is headed. Only then can we prevail.
